The electric car market in July: a small record on the "statistical plateau"

Auto stats

Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of registrations of cars with electric power plants and identified the Top 20 brands and models in three segments: import of used cars, domestic resale and purchase of new electric cars.

Dynamics of the electric car market

In July, Ukrainians bought 7,000 new and used electric cars. This is 51.5% more than last July 2023 and 12% more than June.

Despite the irregular supply of electricity and queues at individual electric charging stations, the passenger car segment of the BEV group in Ukraine does not slow down, but even increases them. The number of "freshly driven" passenger cars last month (more on that later) turned out to be a record.

In addition, it is worth noting that the new price for electricity for household consumers will not have an impact on this part of the market — this issue is discussed in more detail in a separate article.

Dynamics of the market of electric cars in Ukraine, July-2023 — July-2024

Imported used electric cars occupied 54.5% of the market, the number of first registrations was 3,805. And this is currently a historical maximum.

On the domestic market, 2,193 purchase and sale agreements for electric vehicles were concluded, which is a share of 31.4%.

14.1% of electric cars were bought new ( 988 units). Which is not far from the all-time record for this sub-segment, which was set in February of this year, when the number of new electric cars crossed the one thousand mark.

Among the total number of electric cars in May, 98.7% were cars, 1.3% were trucks (92 units).

Park of electric cars

As of the beginning of July 2024, according to the estimates of the Institute of Car Market Research, the total fleet of automobiles with electric engines is 115,857 units., registered in Ukraine (with the exception of those removed from the register in connection with culling and export abroad). This number includes 112,973 cars, 2,878 trucks and 6 buses. The actual number may be lower, since not all facts of destruction or theft of electric cars in the temporarily occupied territories have been documented, and there is also no exact number of those cars that have gone abroad, while not issuing a deregistration in connection with this circumstance.

Electric cars are a domestic market

The leader in the Ukrainian domestic market of electric cars remains Tesla, whose cars are among the best in terms of characteristics and capabilities, and in addition, their prices have now fallen dramatically. The share of cars of this American manufacturer almost reached a third of the secondary market — 29.4%.

Nissan (23.5%) was also among the top three favorites of Ukrainian buyers , which until recently managed to hold the top spot for almost 10 years thanks to the most affordable and therefore the most popular Nissan Leaf model.

Volkswagen occupied an intermediate position between the leaders and the "peloton", with a share of more than ten percent (12.6%), but less than the two brands mentioned above. The share of others is less than 5%.

Volkswagen is in third place (327 units), and Hyundai is in fourth place (310 units). KIA closes the top five with a total of 199 electric cars.

Among the models of "freshly driven" electric cars, an interesting struggle for the primacy has been going on for several months: the Nissan Leaf (530 units) managed to return to the top of the list, displacing the Tesla Model 3 (432 units) to the second position. The gap between the "relatives" — Tesla Model 3 and Model Y (419 units) looks no less interesting — the difference this time is only a few cars.

On the fourth (not as interesting as the previous three) position is the Tesla Model S (217 units), even though it is currently the most affordable model from the Tesla family. Rounding out the top five is the Volkswagen e-Golf, with a total of 209 first registrations.

About electric trucks, which recently received benefits in the form of VAT cancellation on them. So far, these changes in import rules have not had much of an impact on their import volumes. In July , 73 such units arrived. — about the same amount (up to 100 units) as in previous months. This sub-segment still gained enough popularity due to the limited choice of models, their characteristics (similar to the characteristics of early BEV cars), and somewhat high prices. Hereʼs a list of all the newly arrived electric trucks submitted for first registration last month:

  1. Renault Kangoo — 33 pcs.
  2. Nissan e-NV200 — 25 pcs.
  3. Mercedes-Benz eSprinter — 4 pcs.
  4. Maxus E-Deliver 3 — 2 pcs.
  5. Ford Transit Connect — 2 pcs.

Other models — 1 each: Volkswagen e-Transporter, e-Crafter and e-Caddy; Peugeot Partner, Mercedes-Benz eVito, Citroen Jumper and Berlingo.

Electric cars — sales of new ones

The number one brand of new cars in the BEV group (surprisingly) went to Honda for the second month in a row, with 268 vehicles and a segment share of 27.1%. The second place with the result of 209 cars and 21.2% belongs to BYD, the third place belongs to Nissan with 121 cars and a share of 12.2%. And as far as the fourth position, the leader of previous periods is Volkswagen, with a total of 106 cars and a share of 10.7%. Fifth place went to Zeekr, 84 electric cars and a share of 8.5%.

Among individual models, Honda M-NV (239 units) takes the first place again in July, with a clear quantitative advantage over all other participants in the rating, as it was previously with the model, which this time took only fourth place. In the next, second place is BYD Song Plus (123 units).

The Nissan Ariya crossover is in third position with a total of 118 new cars sold.

The fourth step is the Volkswagen ID.4 (69 units) — a car that held the top spot for a long time, it seems, is no longer able to interest the required number of buyers. Perhaps several factors did not play into the hands of "Ida" here — an increase (due to the appreciation of the currency) of delivery costs, regular warnings to Chinese dealers about selling cars abroad, and certain technical nuances of the operation of this car could also have an effect — rear-wheel drive (in versions Crozz), which few people pay attention to before the onset of winter, different-sized tires on axles, certain problems with electronics. However, for now, this is all just speculation, because the same Honda M-NV actually arrives in a similar way and is produced under a different brand for the Chinese domestic market. When we have a clear answer on this, we will be sure to share it.

Rounding out the five new electric cars is Zeekr 001, which was submitted for the first registration in the number of 68 cars.
