New motorcycles up to 150 cc: what to buy to start in 2025?

If you have just discovered the world of two-wheeled vehicles (i.e., have officially received a category "A" driverʼs license) and are considering a motorcycle as your first personal transport, the class up to 150 cc can be a good start.

Such models have moderate power, simple design, economical fuel consumption and relatively low weight — about 100 kg. That is why they are in steady demand among beginners, couriers, summer residents and those looking for an affordable solution for trips within the city or village.

From the beginning of 2025 to mid-May, more than 6,000 new motorcycles of this class were purchased in Ukraine. Most of them are budget models from little-known brands, but there are also vehicles from international manufacturers. In this selection, we will consider the most popular models chosen by buyers and briefly explain what you should pay attention to before buying.

First, about popularity in numbers, for the period from the beginning of the year to mid-May:

What is important when choosing a "subcompact car"?

  1. Disc brakes are a must, at least in the front. Drum brakes are a thing of the past, and even with a bike weighing 100 kg, they donʼt always cope, especially on descents or in the rain. If both wheels have disc brakes, itʼs even better, although this is rare in the budget segment.
  2. An electric starter is a must-have. Even if there is a kickstarter, after the third start in the rain you will understand why the button is a godsend. And if the battery suddenly dies, then you will need a pedal, so it is best to have both options.
  3. The clutch system is better than dry. In Chinese bikes, it is most often in an oil bath, but ask the seller what is actually in there.
  4. Having a tachometer is a small thing, but it helps. Getting used to not revving by sound, but seeing the revolutions is a useful habit for the future.
  5. Plastic — look at the fasteners. Itʼs not the wings that break, but the lugs. When itʼs in the air on one screw, it wobbles, cracks, and doesnʼt look very sturdy at all.

Safety is our everything

After choosing a motorcycle, it is equally important to take care of the equipment. The minimum that we recommend having is a helmet (preferably a full-face helmet), reinforced gloves, a jacket with shoulder and back protection, and at least reinforced jeans. Do not neglect this: even at a speed of 40 km/h, careless braking can be fatal without protection.

  • Helmet — $100...$250
  • Jacket with protection — $100...$200
  • Gloves — $30...$80
  • Pants or knee pads — $50...$100
  • Boots — $80...$150

Most light motorcycles can be serviced by yourself. Oil, spark plugs, filters, chains are all inexpensive, and parts are readily available even in small towns. Plus, many models (including the Spark, Mustang, Forte) have huge user communities that are happy to share tips and step-by-step instructions.

How much does a new motorcycle up to 150 cm³ cost in Ukraine?

Budget Chinese new models (Spark, Forte, Mustang):

  • from 800 to 1300 $

These are basic "workhorses" — simple, affordable, no frills, but with a new frame, engine, and warranty (which formally exists).

Indian models (Bajaj, TVS):

  • from 1100 to 1600 $

Slightly more expensive, but often with better build quality, the motors are more durable.

Japanese bikes (Honda, Yamaha):

  • from 2500 to 5000 $

Remember: a light motorcycle is not a step back. It is an opportunity to learn the basics without unnecessary risk and loss. And who knows — maybe it is on it that you will fall in love with the road so much that no liters will overshadow the memories of your first trip.
