What truck tractors do Ukrainian carriers choose? Results of January

Experts of the Auto Market Research Institute analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in Ukraine during January and identified the top models in three segments of truck tractors: used import, domestic resale, and new purchase.

Dynamics of the truck tractor market

In January 2023, Ukrainians purchased 2.3 thousand new and used tractor units. This indicator is 30% lower than in the same period of 2023, but 10.4% higher than sales in December 2023.

The share of domestic sales was 56.5%, import of used truck tractors was 39.7%.The total share of "trucks" with mileage was 96.2%.

3.8% of truck tractors were purchased new, which in quantitative terms equals 88 units.

The chart shows how during 2023 the demand for truck tractors gradually decreased, and only in January 2024 there was some increase in activity in this segment. The lowest volume of sales of semi-trailer trucks for 12 months was recorded last year in December. There were several reasons for this: partial (close to full) satisfaction of the needs of carriers (primarily international) in such vehicles, which were in short supply a year ago, and they were actively bought, because after the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine, the main transport for export-import of goods became automotive. Blocking of borders with several countries by so-called "activists" also left their mark on the business of international carriers. Borders are now open, which may have allowed a slightly larger number of representatives of this business to make positive decisions about expanding their fleets, which was reflected in the volume of trades in January.

The most popular tractors on the domestic market

DAF XF confidently remains the most popular tractor unit on the domestic market in Ukraine. Agreements for the purchase and sale of such models were concluded in 407 units. MAN TGX is in second place (143 units), Volvo FH is third (122 units). In addition to these models, Reault Magnum and Premium (119 and 114 units, respectively) also entered the top five tractors with the highest demand.

The most popular used tractors imported from abroad

In January , MAN TGX (269 units) won the first place among the "driven" tractors. In second place on the list is DAF XF (246 units).

The Volvo FH (145 units) will continue to occupy the third place, and the Scania R-Series (81 units) will occupy the fourth place. Rounding out the top five are Mercedes-Benz Actros (45 units).

Among the new models, Ukrainian carriers most often bought Volvo FH (35 units). The second largest number of first registrations is Scania R-Series with a total of 15 tractors.

The third step is in the MAN TGX (11 units), the fourth is in the Renault T-Truck (8 units). The fifth among the new "trucks" is Scania G-Series (6 units).
