Not a record for the first time. What electric cars did you buy in December?

Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of registrations of cars with electric power plants and identified the Top-20 models in three segments: import of used cars, domestic resale and purchase of new electric cars.

Dynamics of the electric car market

In December, Ukrainians bought 6,100 new and used electric cars. This is 165% more than in December 2022, and 2.6% less than in November 2023. And this is the first time when we have to talk not about records, but about a slight decrease in sales of electric cars in Ukraine. Which, in the end, is quite logical — sooner or later any market segment reaches the so-called saturation point, which in Ukrainian realities for the electric car segment is determined not only by the number of potential buyers who have the required amount in hand, but also by the availability of household charging points, which are mainly used by owners of electric cars.

If you look at the dynamics of the market of electric passenger cars, you can see how the resulting line gradually leveled off, and finally the first minus in terms of volumes was recorded. However, in general, according to IDA experts, this is a temporary phenomenon, which is partly caused by the blocking of borders, and to a lesser extent by the approach to the mentioned saturation point. Although this year, most likely, this point will still be reached, and the dynamics in the segment will change from rapid growth to wave-like.

Imported used electric cars were the main auctions ( 61.3%, 3,715 units). And although overall volumes "sagged", it was precisely in the import segment that growth took place — the supply on the market is expanding, slightly outpacing the demand. In addition, the import of electric passenger cars is facilitated by the "zero" rate of customs clearance: the registration of a car in Ukraine is significantly cheaper, because, unlike cars with an internal combustion engine, you do not need to pay VAT (20% of the value) and customs duty (10% of the value). and the excise tax is minimal (1 euro per 1 kWh of battery capacity). Trucks are imported less, because due to a legal conflict, during their importation, they have to pay VAT in the amount of 20% of their value.

In the domestic market, 27% (1,640 units) of the total number of purchase and sale agreements for cars with an electric engine (or engines) were concluded.

11.7% of electric cars (710 units) were bought new, which is 132 less than the previous sales.

Among the total number of electric cars in December , 98.9% were cars, 1.1% were trucks (65 units).

As of the end of 2023, according to the Institute of Car Market Research, the total fleet of automobiles with electric engines is 85,881 units., registered in Ukraine (with the exception of those deregistered due to culling and export abroad): 83,668 cars, 2,208 trucks and 5 buses.

TOP electric cars on the domestic market

The first place in the domestic market with a significant gap from the closest competitors (which will have to be observed for quite some time) is occupied by the Nissan Leaf. In December, 384 purchase and sale agreements were concluded for these. "Leaf" became the most popular electric car in Ukraine primarily due to its availability, sufficient supply on the market and characteristics that suit many citizens.

Tesla Model 3 is on the second step, with 167 deals, and Volkswagen e-Golf is on the third (124 units).

The fourth place is occupied by another product of the American automobile industry, Tesla Model S, with the number of resales of 108 units. Rounding out the top five is the Volkswagen ID.4, with the result of 85 purchased crossovers with mileage.

TOP imported used electric cars

As in the domestic market, Nissal Leaf (531 units) retained the lead among "freshly driven" electric cars in December.

Tesla Model 3 remains in second place (476 units), the third step went to another Tesla product, the Model Y crossover (333 units). In the fourth position is the Volkswagen e-Golf (310 units), which changed places with the Tesla Model Y. Rounding out the top five is the Volkswagen ID.4 (202 units).

Top new electric cars

The first place according to the results of December remains with Volkswagen ID.4 (227 units), with a clear quantitative advantage over all other participants in the rating. After all, the next, second place, which went to Honda e:NS1, has a much more modest result — a total of 74 units were registered. The third on the list is the rather promising crossover BYD Song Plus (61 units), the fourth is another electric crossover (and again of Chinese origin) — Volkswagen ID.6 (53 units), the fifth — Toyota bZ4x (39 units) .

Looking at the list of the most popular electric cars in December, it is not too difficult to come to the conclusion that the products of the Chinese automobile industry prevail in this segment, while every month we see more and more competition between Chinese models, and it becomes increasingly difficult to imagine that this list can be filled with cars from well-known European, Japanese or Korean brands, in "pure" execution, and not products of joint ventures from China. After all, the mass media and analysts of the automotive markets of European countries talk about similar trends. And the "Chinese" are no longer those who arrived in Ukraine in the 2000s, and could not win the favor of buyers. Now, according to the most recent studies of customs statistics, the most expensive cars come from China, and their average customs value is the highest among all countries — over $70,000!
