The domestic market of electric vehicles has weakened somewhat, but imports and sales of new ones are once again record high. What did you buy in October?

The segment of electric cars does not give up: a slight decrease in the volume of trades on the market of used cars in October did not affect electric cars too much: in total, they were bought more than in September, let alone by 30 units. However, there is more. The number of new sold electric cars also increased — by 69 units compared to September.

Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of registrations of such cars and identified the Top-20 models in three segments: import of used cars, domestic resale and purchase of new cars with an electric engine.

Dynamics of the electric car market

In October, Ukrainians purchased almost 6,200 new and used electric cars. This is 156% more than in October 2022, and only 1.6% more (but still more) than in September 2023. And this is again a monthly statistical record of sales of electric cars in Ukraine.

Among the total number of electric cars in October, 99% were passenger cars, 1% (53 units) were trucks.

Imported used electric cars were mainly traded ( 58.9%, 3,653 units). Such a number turned out to be a record in the history of the "electric" segment of the Ukrainian car market. The import of passenger cars is facilitated by the "zero" customs clearance rate: the registration of a car in Ukraine is significantly cheaper, because, unlike cars with an internal combustion engine, you do not need to pay VAT (20% of the value) and customs duty (10% of the value), and excise tax — minimum (1 euro per 1 kWh of battery capacity). Trucks are imported less, because due to a legal conflict, during their importation, they have to pay VAT in the amount of 20% of their value.

In the domestic market, 27.6% of the total number of purchase and sale agreements for cars with an electric motor (1,714 units) were concluded.

13.6% of electric cars (842 units) were bought new. It also turned out to be the maximum indicator in this market segment.

As of the end of October 2023, according to the calculations of the Institute of Car Market Research, the total fleet of automobiles with electric engines is 76,916 units registered in Ukraine (excluding those deregistered due to scrapping and export abroad): 74,766 passenger cars, 2,145 trucks and 5 buses.

TOP of the most popular electric cars on the domestic market

The first place in the domestic market, with a large margin from the nearest competitors, is occupied by the Nissan Leaf. In October, 393 purchase and sale agreements were concluded for these. This model has been leading the rating for several years in a row, and such cars are chosen primarily because of their availability — a sufficient supply on the market and a relatively low price.

The Volkswagen e-Golf is on the second step (186 units), and the Tesla Model 3 is on the third, with 149 deals.

The fourth crossover for the Chinese market with the emblem of the German car manufacturer is the Volkswagen ID.4 (109 units). Rounding out the top five is the compact Renault ZOE, with the result of 87 purchased cars with mileage.

TOP imported used electric cars

As in the domestic market, Nissal Leaf (588 units) retained the lead in the segment of "freshly driven" electric cars in October.

Volkswagen E-Golf remains in second place (432 units), interest in which is growing. The budget Tesla Model 3 (403 units) took third place, and Tesla Model Y (251 units) remained in fourth place. Closes the top five Renault Zoe (194 units).

Top new electric cars

The first place according to the results of October remains for Volkswagen ID.4 (355 units), however, all these models are manufactured in China for the local market and imported by non-official dealers of the brand in Ukraine. A similar situation with the Volkswagen ID.6, of which 45 units were registered for the first time in October, which forced it to give up one position to the next model.

On the second step is the Toyota bZ4X — 64 of these were registered. Honda e:NS1 (39 units) took the fourth place, Audi Q4 e-tron (24 units) took the fifth place.

The main trend identified by the experts of the Auto Market Research Institute in the segment of new electric vehicles is that the majority of such vehicles enter Ukraine from China. A significant part of the models are models manufactured for the local market and imported to Ukraine by independent dealers. Thus, of the 842 new electric vehicles registered for the first time in October, 698 were made in China: thatʼs 83%. In addition, such cars are imported as used (for example, among the imported used cars there are 109 VW ID.4 2023), so the real volume of electric car imports from China is actually even higher.
