Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in March 2023, described the market dynamics and identified the 15 most popular new passenger cars of the month.
Dynamics of the new car market
In March, Ukrainians bought 5,000 new cars. This is 733.3% more than in March 2022 and 38.9% more than in February 2023. However, the sevenfold increase in sales of new cars in March cannot be considered a sensation — such results are the result of almost "zero" sales in the first few weeks of the beginning of the full-scale war, when the Service Centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs were temporarily closed.
In total, in the first quarter of 2023, Ukrainians registered 12,100 new cars for the first time, which is 6.1% more than in the same period of 2022.
The majority of new cars in March ( 93.8%, 4,698 units) were imported from abroad. The share of passenger cars manufactured in Ukraine by the method of large-unit assembly was 6.2% (309 units).
During the past month, the most new cars were registered in Kyiv city (1,559 units) and Kyiv region (674 units), as well as Dnipropetrovsk (465 units), Odesa (348 units) and Lviv (290 units) regions.
The fewest new cars were registered for the first time in Kherson (3 units), Luhansk (6 units) , Donetsk (11 units) , Chernihiv (36 units)and Zaporizhzhia (52 units) regions.
The most popular new imported cars
In March, when buying a new car, Ukrainians chose the Toyota brand most often (631 units, 12.6%). The second place was taken by the Renault brand (506 units, 10.1%).
Volkswagen (492 units, 9.8%) rose to third place, while Skoda (383 units, 7.6%) climbed to fourth place, pushing the BMW brand one step down (376 units, 7.5%). %).
Among the models in the third month of 2023, Renault Duster (408 units) remains the best-selling model, with a large margin from the closest competitors. Mazda CX-5 (180 units) rose to second place from fourth place, and Hyundai Tucson (178 units) rose to third place from fifth place.
The popular Volkswagen ID.4 (160 units), which previously showed a confident upward trend in the sales ranking, dropped from second place to fourth place.
Rounding out the top five is the Toyota RAV-4 (142 units), which a month ago, according to the results of February, was in fifteenth place.
The absolute majority (12 out of 15) of popular models in March are crossovers and SUVs. That is, Ukrainians will continue to give preference to practical universal passenger cars when buying a new car.

Among the new passenger cars assembled in Ukraine, in February the most purchased cars were Skoda Kodiaq (110 units), Skoda Karoq (60 units) and Lada Granta (20 units).
