Rating of cars with hybrid powertrains — Q3 2025

Analysts from the Institute for Automotive Research summarized sales of new and used passenger cars equipped with hybrid powertrains on the Ukrainian car market and compiled ratings of brands and models for each segment. Time period — Q3 2025.

Used car market

The market for used hybrid cars (which includes domestic resales and first registrations of used cars) in the third quarter clearly showed who the historical leader is. Toyota absolutely dominates, and its advantage over competitors is not just large, but decisive. This is natural, because it was Toyota that first made a bet on hybrid technologies and has the widest range of proven models. Following the Japanese giant is a powerful “American” pool represented by Ford. This brand is gaining market share due to the popularity of certain models that are actively imported from the USA.

The ranking further indicates a strong interest in the premium segment. The top 10 includes four German and one Japanese premium brand: Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus. This indicates that the hybrid installation in the secondary market has ceased to be just a matter of economy, but has become an attribute of more expensive, high-quality cars that owners are actively updating. Honda, Hyundai, and KIA also provide stable demand, offering proven and more affordable hybrid solutions for the mass consumer.

The model rating of used hybrids fully confirms the dominance of mass and practical solutions. The family duo from Toyota — RAV4 and Camry — does not leave the first positions. These models have already become the de facto standard of a hybrid crossover and sedan, respectively, combining reliability and liquidity. They are confidently joined by three American models from Ford: Fusion, Escape and C-Max. Their high presence is a direct consequence of active imports from the North American market, where these hybrids were once very popular.

Interestingly, the “pioneer” of the hybrid movement, the Toyota Prius, also remains in the top. Although it is not as numerous as crossovers, its presence confirms that for many buyers it is still a symbol of proven economy. The Chevrolet Volt remains the leader among plug-in hybrids (PHEV), and the KIA Niro is a popular choice in the mass segment. Finally, the ranking highlights the entry of the premium class into the top thanks to the BMW X5 and Lexus RX, demonstrating that hybrid technologies are already an integral part of the market for large, expensive crossovers.

New car market

The new hybrid car market is a story of strategic investment and the dominance of dealers who were the first to offer a wide range of current models. Here, Toyota also confidently remains the No. 1 brand, offering hybrid versions of almost all of its popular models. However, a serious fight is unfolding right behind it for second place, where BMW, Nissan and Mercedes-Benz are demonstrating high activity. This indicates that hybrids have become a standard offer in the premium class.

In this segment, the presence of brands that are actively investing in plug-in hybrids (PHEV) or mild hybrids (MHEV) is very noticeable: Audi, Land Rover, Lexus and Volvo are confidently included in the top 10. This indicates that new hybrids are purchased not only for fuel economy reasons, but also for power, technologicality and reduced emissions. It is also worth noting the steady presence of Renault and Suzuki, which close the ranking, offering new, modern and affordable hybrid technologies for the mass European segment.

The model rating of new hybrids clearly reflects the priorities of the Ukrainian buyer: these are crossovers and proven, liquid models. At the head, by a huge margin, is the Toyota RAV4, which is the absolute bestseller in its class. Its success is also supported by its younger brother , the Toyota Yaris Cross, which indicates a strong demand for compact and economical hybrid crossovers. The Toyota Camry retains its appeal in the primary market, remaining a popular hybrid sedan.

In addition to Toyota, the market is willing to buy hybrid versions of popular crossovers: Nissan Qashqai and Nissan X-Trail demonstrate high performance. The presence of Renault Duster is interesting — its success in the hybrid version confirms the huge demand for affordable and simple cars in this class. Finally, the ranking is completed by representatives of the premium segment: Audi Q8, Volvo XC90, Mercedes-Benz GLE and BMW X5 show that hybrid technology has finally become the norm for crossovers in the upper price range.
