If you change the color of your carʼs body, the legislation requires mandatory re-registration of the vehicle. The Main Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reminds you of this.
📍 When re-registration is required
If you have changed the main color of your car — even if it is a partial paint job — you need to re-register the vehicle. You can do this at any MIA service center, regardless of your place of registration or residence.
🎨 When re-registration is not necessary
If it is only a matter of changing the shade within the basic color, re-registration is not required. The 11 basic colors officially approved for vehicle classification are considered basic:
Gray, Black, White, Blue, Red, Green, Beige, Brown, Yellow, Orange, Purple.
A change in tone within these colors is not grounds for re-registration.
🖌 If the car is in several colors
In this case, the color of the lower part of the body is considered the main one. The remaining parts can be painted in additional colors, but not more than 50% of the total body area.
📊 How many cars have been officially repainted?
This year, Ukrainian car owners are gradually becoming more likely to change their carʼs color officially, i.e. through re-registration at the Ministry of Internal Affairs service centers. The largest number of such cases is among passenger cars.
On average, 190 cars receive new registration certificates with a new color every month. Passenger cars predominate — the average share of such vehicles for the period from April 2024 to April 2025 was 68.9%. Trucks are the second most frequently updated, at 23.2%. Buses account for another 8%.
🟢 General trends:
- The most active change in the color of passenger cars was in October 2024 (176 cases).
- Trucks consistently occupy second place in terms of the number of re-registrations.
- Although buses are painted less frequently, a peak of 23 re-registrations was recorded in March 2025.
Such data indicate: despite the decline in activity in the winter months, the number of repainted cars traditionally increases in the spring, which may be due to seasonal fleet renewals or the return of vehicles from long-term storage.
🎨 What colors are the most popular among Ukrainian cars?
Regardless of the season, the preferences of Ukrainian motorists in choosing colors remain stable. According to the results of January-April 2025, restrained shades prevail in the market of new and used cars.
🔝 Top 5 car colors:
- Gray — 32.7%
- Black — 22.8%
- White — 17.2%
- Blue — 11.2%
- Red — 6.3%
The numbers confirm the trend: conservative shades (gray, black, white) dominate, covering more than 60% of passenger cars. Brighter colors — yellow, orange, purple — remain exotic, chosen by a few.
