We have gas. How many cars were equipped with LPG last year?

The main factor that encourages car owners to install LPG equipment (LPG) on their cars is the opportunity to reduce fuel costs. However, the “old formula” regarding the price of a propane-butane mixture, when a liter of it was asked for about half as much at gas stations as a liter of gasoline, no longer exists. Although, there is still some margin for savings. At least until the schedule for increasing excise taxes on LPG completely eliminates it.

How did things go in this part of the market last year? This is what analysts from the Auto Market Research Institute studied, and they are ready to share the results of this work.

In total, during 2024, HBO officially appeared (only those facts of conversion registered by the service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs are taken into account) on almost 21.5 thousand vehicles. For comparison, in 2023 this number was 37.7 thousand, in 2022 — 22.3 thousand.

Here is the division by type:

  • Passenger cars — 21,195 conversions
  • Cargo — 334 conversions
  • Buses — 4 conversions

The dynamics by month is as follows:

HBO installation dynamics in 2024

It is worth recalling that last year began with price tags at gas stations in the “gas” window at about 32 UAH/l. Then the price decreased slightly, reaching 28 UAH/l in the spring, and then even lower — 26.50 on average across Ukraine in the summer. In the fall, a significant increase in prices for liquefied gas began — in November, it was already about 35 UAH/l, which remained until almost the end of the year, and the next increase occurred in 2025 — the current average retail price of “autogas” is 36.8 UAH/l.

Putting these circumstances together, we can see that price tags at gas stations have a direct impact on the popularity of LPG among motorists — lower prices — more conversions. The price of LPG increases — installation volumes fall.

What car brands were most often found last year in the stands of stations that convert cars to gas?

It is also worth learning about individual models whose owners most often decided to install an alternative fuel system on their cars:

If in previous years American cars dominated among the brands, this time we have a mix of those with European models, and it is also impossible not to notice that all VAZs have disappeared from the Top 10. So, the championship here belongs to the Skoda Octavia, albeit of early releases, when there were still enough “atmospheric engines” — the average age of these cars, which were converted to “gas”, was 18 years.

Nissan Rogue is in second place, actually because it has been equipped with a 2.5-liter “simple atmospheric” engine in recent years, with no alternative (if we don’t mention the rare hybrid variants). Where else would you put LPG on such cars? The average age of these crossovers converted to “autogas” was 8 years.

The top three models also include the Mitsubishi Outlander with an average age of 11 years.

By class (dimensions, according to European principles of passenger car classification), the largest share among converted cars is crossovers — 35%. Golf class (C) passenger cars took 23%, and B-class city cars — 20% in this segment.
