A gift on wheels: What cars did Ukrainians give as gifts in 2024?

One of the ways to transfer ownership of a vehicle is to officially donate it. This option was used 38,685 times last year. And this is not just a statistical record, it is ten times more than the year before, in 2023 — then “only” 3,790 cars were presented. Even fewer in 2022 — 1,977 units. What caused such popularity of donating cars?

Dynamics of TK donations, 2024.

While we are looking for the reason for such a surge in generosity, letʼs examine which vehicles were most often given as gifts, according to information from the open data of the State Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Here is the list and the number:

  • Passenger cars — 32,880 pcs.
  • Cargo — 4,173 pcs.
  • Semi-trailers — 554 pcs.
  • Trailers — 494 pcs.
  • Motorcycles — 384 pcs.
  • Buses — 167 pcs.
  • Mopeds — 23 pcs.
  • Quad bikes — 7 pcs.
  • Tricycles — 3 pcs.

In addition to the understandable popularity of passenger cars, we see that more exotic vehicles were also donated, including semi-trailers and buses.

What brands (without distinguishing the type of vehicle) were donated most often? Experts from the Institute for Car Market Research identified them, here are the ten most popular ones according to the results of last year:

  1. Volkswagen — 4135 pcs.
  2. Toyota — 3233 pcs.
  3. Renault — 2313 pcs.
  4. Mercedes-Benz — 2232 pcs.
  5. Hyundai — 1824 pcs.
  6. Ford — 1774 pcs.
  7. Nissan — 1716 pcs.
  8. BMW — 1626 pcs.
  9. Skoda — 1570 pcs.
  10. Audi — 1355 pcs.

And what about the models? IDA analysts also coped with this task, and we are immediately publishing the top ten gift cars:

  1. Skoda Octavia — 875 pcs.
  2. Volkswagen Passat — 773 pcs.
  3. Toyota RAV4 — 705 units.
  4. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter — 621 pcs.
  5. Volkswagen Transporter — 585 pcs.
  6. Toyota Camry — 571 pcs.
  7. Volkswagen Golf — 535 pcs.
  8. KIA Sportage — 473 pcs.
  9. Hyundai Tucson — 466 units.
  10. BMW X5 — 438 units.

The list is quite "motley" — it includes not only cars in the classical sense, but also several "commercial vehicles". Although, perhaps these are all stereotypes, remnants of the past, they say, a gift should be one that meets the wishes of the person (or woman) to whom it is intended, and even better — one that the person would not have bought for themselves for one reason or another, that is, one that even slightly goes beyond the scope of imagination.

Investigating the statistics of donations further, our analysts identified another interesting parameter — the average age of cars that were donated so actively last year. And the total number turned out to be 13 years. Not that itʼs a lot, but itʼs also impossible to call these gifts new. Although, maybe this is another of our stereotypes that everything donated must be new.

Or maybe itʼs not about stereotypes, but about other factors that led to a 10-fold increase in the volume of vehicle donations. After all, it is important that when selling a second and subsequent passenger car, as well as other vehicles (starting from the first) , a tax is levied depending on the number of cars sold during the year. If the donation is between family members of the first or second degree of kinship, then taxation does not occur.

If we recall the statistics of the secondary market, the number and dynamics of resales in 2024, as well as some other operations, such as vehicle scrapping, they will have in common that the peak of activity falls on the spring, in May. This is the time when the mobilization rules changed, under the new conditions of which, if the owner has more than one vehicle, the others can be withdrawn for defense needs. That is why citizens reacted to such legislation by massively re-registering cars, including through donations, as an alternative way of transferring property within the family. Which ultimately explains why the volume of gifts has grown so rapidly — this is not a random influx of citizensʼ generosity, but their mass reaction to changes in certain rules by the state.
