How much does it cost to charge an electric car in February 2025?

Every year, our fleet is replenished with newer models of electric vehicles, which in turn have sufficient battery capacity to avoid the need for daily recharging, as was the case with the variants of the early years of production. That is, the renewal of the electric vehicle fleet leads to the fact that the factor of "tying" to a home (or garage) outlet, which was extremely necessary for models with a battery capacity of about 20 kWh, which was enough for a day or two of travel, is less and less felt.

This factor previously held back the development of the electric vehicle segment — the number of potential buyers with access to a connection point is limited. However, the expansion of the network of public chargers, capable of relatively quickly charging electric vehicles with direct current, provides new opportunities for the battery-powered car segment.

Analysts from the Institute for Automotive Market Research analyzed the set of models in the Ukrainian electric vehicle fleet and determined that about 40% of its residents have batteries with a capacity of over 50 kWh, so they can be safely classified as "long-range", or at least those suitable for interregional trips.

So what about the prices, and are there any savings that are talked about so much? So, if you charge an electric car exclusively at EV charging stations (electric charging stations), the savings factor does not disappear: with an average consumption of 20 kWh per 100 km of run, such a distance will cost a maximum of 360 UAH (unchanged compared to January) . The least expensive option for a not very large passenger car equipped with gas cylinder equipment will cost (at 12 l/100 km of propane-butane mixture) 450 UAH. And this is still a rather optimistic value, usually in practice cars with LPG require more fuel.

So, why charge at publicly accessible chargers? Specialists of the Institute of Automotive Market Research collected information from mobile applications of leading network EV charging stations in Ukraine and selected the most frequently repeated price values. Depending on the location, lower or higher tariffs may occur — this should be clarified in the relevant EV charging station operatorsʼ applications. Also, some stations have a "standby" tariff — when the car is connected, but charging is not taking place, but we will not take this moment into account. Letʼs note that this information is provided for reference purposes — this is not a rating of EV charging stations, but only a guideline for those who have or plan to purchase an electric car.

Prices for EZS, February 2025

Compared to the previous month, prices per kilowatt-hour for different operators fluctuated, without a general trend of increase or decrease. Some operators reduced the tariff for AC connections by almost 2 hryvnias, some increased the price for DC ports, from +0.5 to +1.75 hryvnias.

According to the observations of IDA specialists, higher tariffs are more common at roadside EV charging stations, especially if they are high-speed (80...100 kW and more). Lower tariffs (in some places even by a few hryvnias) are mainly at EV charging stations located in the parking lots of various businesses — hotels, shopping centers, restaurants, etc. Assuming that such a pricing procedure is caused by the fact that these same businesses provide a certain discount from themselves in order to attract the attention of a larger number of EV owners (potential customers), in the following price sections we will mainly rely on roadside EV charging stations, considering their tariffs to be devoid of local discounts, i.e. ordinary.

The average price of a kilowatt-hour received through the AC port is currently (rounded) 13.60 UAH (-0.40 UAH), through the DC port — 17.36 UAH (+0.36 UAH).

EZS market news

Ukraineʼs largest fuel company OKKO is buying 50% of one of the leaders in the electric car charging market, Kyiv-based TOKA, Forbes reports. "The acquisition of a stake in TOKA is an investment in the development of the electric car charging market in Ukraine, which is consistent with our strategy of supporting infrastructure for electric vehicles," OKKO said.

Ukrainian operator of EV charging stations and developer of solutions for them, Go-To-U, announced its intention to create a roaming EV charging network in Ukraine, and called on other station owners or network operators to join their structure, which, according to the company itself, already includes more than 950 thousand chargers in 65 countries. For electric vehicle owners, this will allow them to use one application for different stations (if they are connected to the roaming network), book EV charging stations for the required time, and pay for the energy received from one account. What advantages this can bring to EV charging station owners who are already operating and have their own software, should obviously be found out from the initiators of the roaming network construction.
