The motorcycle market is in high season! What did Ukrainians buy in May?

Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of motorcycle registrations in May and identified the most popular models in three segments: import of used, domestic resale and purchase of new motorcycles.

Dynamics of the motorcycle market

The motorcycle segment is approaching , or already at, the peak of its high season — without even looking at the numbers, just a cursory glance at the chart, itʼs easy enough to come to that conclusion.

Now, actually, about the numbers: in May, Ukrainians bought 7.4 thousand of all motorcycles. This is still 5.7 % less than in the same period last year (which gives reason to assume that the peak of the season will come next month), but 5.8% more than in April 2024.

Among the total number, 48.7% of motorcycles were new (imported from abroad), which is 3,622 units. Usually, in the motor vehicle segment, the majority of deals are sales of new vehicles, but in the past few months this "tradition" has been broken, and currently the share of new ones has not yet reached the volume to obtain a "controlling stake", which may happen in the following periods.

On the domestic market, 3,183 contracts for the purchase and sale of motor vehicles were concluded, which accounted for 42.8% of the total number.

Only 8.5% of motorcycles were imported used from abroad (635 units).

We remind you that the numbers given here are obtained from the accounting of official sales agreements and first registrations. The "shadow" part of the motorcycle market (in particular, the secondary one) remains outside the scope of this review. According to IDA experts, it can be quite significant — even equal to, or even greater than, the official part.

By individual sub-segments, the dynamics of motorcycle sales (where seasonality is very clearly expressed, and year-to-year comparison is of primary importance) looks as follows (comparing last month to the previous month, MM, and last month to the same month last year, YY) :

• Domestic resales: +1.1% MM, +16.5% YY
• Used import: -9.4% MM, -20.5% YY
• New imports: +13.8% MM, -16.9% YY

The average age of motorcycles on the market (as of May) was 11.3 years for those resold within the country and 12.9 years for motorcycles submitted for first registration after customs clearance.

The most popular motorcycles in the domestic market

In the domestic market, the Japanese brands Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki, as well as the Chinese Geon and Lifan, prevailed among motorcycle manufacturers in the specified period. These five manufacturers occupy 45.3% of the market in the segment.

On the domestic market, sales contracts were most often concluded in May for Lifan LF (161 units), Loncin LX (111 units), and Shineray XY series(107 pcs.).

The most popular used motorcycles brought from abroad

Imports of motorcycles with mileage continue to be held by the Japanese brands Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and the American Harley-Davidson. The products of these five manufacturers cover 84.6% of the "moto" market (that is, almost all) imports.

Among individual models, Honda CB (23 units), Kawasaki Ninja (20 units), Honda CBR (19 units), Yamaha YZF (14 units) and Yamaha YZF series (14 units) were most often submitted for the first state registration.

The most popular new motorcycles

New motorcycles of Chinese manufacturers are mainly bought in Ukraine: in May , Spark, Lifan and Musstang brands once again became the leaders. In general, the share of Chinese products is more than 73% in the market of new motorcycles.

Among the new models of motorcycles in Ukraine, the Spark SP-series (435 units) holds the lead, the Musstang MT (347 units) again took the second place, and the Lifan LF (228 units) took the third place (also without changes compared to previous periods).

Loncin LX series (204 units) and Tekken MH series (168 units) are also among the top five new bikes.
