Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in May 2024, described the market dynamics and identified the 20 most popular new passenger cars of the month.
Dynamics of the new car market
In May, Ukrainians and local enterprises purchased 5,800 new cars. This is 2.8% less than in April of the same year, and 0.3% less than in May 2023. After two months of volume growth, with a record 6,500 in March (not seen since 2021), the new passenger car market returned to monthly averages.
As usual, the majority of new cars in May ( 94.6%, 5525 units) were imported from abroad. The share of passenger cars manufactured in Ukraine by the method of large-unit assembly or converted from imported machine kits amounted to 5.4% (315 units).
Buyers of new cars were mainly natural persons ( 66.8%, 3904 units), legal entities purchased 1936 cars, which is a share of 33.2%.
The largest number of new cars last month were registered in the city of Kyiv (2,228 units, 38.2%) and the Kyiv region (728 units, 12.5%) — which traditionally accounts for almost half of the total volume of the new passenger car market. Dnipropetrovsk (455 units, 7.8%), Odesa (326 units, 5.6%) and Lviv (322 units, 5.9%) regions are also among the leaders.
If we sum up the shares of the five leading regions, we get a value of 69.6%. That is, the lionʼs share of trades takes place precisely in these regions (and the capital). However, at the same time, it should be taken into account that some cars receive Kyiv "registration" not only because they are bought there, but also for two reasons — leasing companies, which can actually transfer vehicles to other regions, but register them at their place of residence. and state institutions plus private companies, which also often register their corporate parks in the capital, closer to the central offices.
The fewest new cars were registered in Kherson (4 units), Donetsk (5 units), Chernihiv (49 units) , Volyn (63 units), and Chernivtsi (63 units) regions. Luhansk region again falls into statistical samples with a zero result.
The total share of these five regions will be only 3.2%.
The most popular new cars
In May, the Toyota brand won the championship (948 units, 14.5% share). In second place is Renault, which "closed" the month with the result of 451 first registrations, which is a share of 7.7%.
On the third step, which to some extent is an atypical situation for the Ukrainian car market, BMW (440 units, 7.5%) is once again a step higher than a month earlier. The fourth is Volkswagen (423 units, 7.2%), Skoda closes the top five with a total of 327 passenger cars and a share of 5.6%.
The first position in the rating of individual models of new passenger cars was regained by the Toyota RAV4 crossover (499 units), significantly displacing the leader of the previous periods, Renault Duster (319 units), which in this case got the second place.
The third position is in KIA Sportage (160 units), the fourth is in Mazda CX-5 (128 units).
The fifth is another crossover, Skoda Kodiaq, which this time was chosen by 122 buyers.

Among the new passenger cars manufactured or converted in Ukraine and registered in May (quantitatively, they are included in the general rating), the five most popular are Skoda Kodiaq (120 units) and Skoda Karoq (58 units), which are produced at the Transcarpathian plant " Eurocar". The third place in the local competition is a Renault Duster converted by one of the local enterprises (with a new name GAS-801RDS) in a special version for the needs of the police (32 units).
