Trucks over 3.5 tons: what was the demand for in April?

Auto stats

Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in Ukraine in April and identified the Top models in three segments of trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons (except tractor-trailers) : used import, domestic resale and purchase of new cars, including those converted in Ukraine .

Truck market dynamics

In April, Ukrainian carriers purchased a total of 3.6 thousand trucks with a gross weight of more than 3.5 tons. This is 72.6% more than in the same period last year, and 33.9% more than in March 2024.

The majority of trucks were purchased (as well as re-registered — citizens are encouraged to do so by the new laws on mobilization, which you can learn more about here ) on the domestic market: 86.6% (3.1 thousand units). And it is precisely as a result of the jump in re-registrations that the statistical volumes of the market have increased, but the actual number of cars sold most likely remains at the level of previous months.

Used 6.6% of trucks (236 units) were brought from abroad.

Last month, 75 imported and 170 manufactured (or converted) trucks were purchased in Ukraine, a total of 245 units., which is a share of 6.8%.

Ten of the twenty most popular trucks remain on this list as models of the Russian-Soviet automobile industry. At the same time, the average age of trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons, re-registered to new owners in April 2024, was 22.2 years. The scale of the excise duty, which increases it by 40 or 50 times when a truck exceeds 5 or 8 years of age, respectively, deters Ukrainian businesses that need such transport from its mass import. This, in turn, does not make it possible to update the fleet with vehicles available to local buyers, even those that meet the Euro-5 environmental standard.

It is also worth noting that there are a few months left before the introduction of Euro-6 economy standards for trucks, which will enter into force on January 1, 2025 — which will be an additional factor in the increase in the price of imported cars of this group.

The most popular used trucks are imported from abroad

Vans with hydroboards (59 units), vans (33 units), container carriers (24 units), side-mounted awning cars were most often brought from abroad in April(24 pcs.), and refrigerated vans with hydroboard (21 pcs.).

Among individual models of trucks with a gross weight of more than 3.5 tons, the largest number of 45 vehicles was added to the Ukrainian fleet by Iveco Daily, in addition to them, 39 Mercedes-Benz Ategos, 25 MAN TGLs, 17 Renault Master and   15 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.
