Trucks over 3.5 tons: what was the demand for in March?

Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in Ukraine in March and identified the Top models in three segments of trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons (except tractor-trailers) : used import, domestic resale and purchase of new cars, including those converted in Ukraine .

Truck market dynamics

In March, Ukrainian carriers purchased a total of 2.7 thousand trucks with a gross weight of more than 3.5 tons. This is 21.7% more than in the same period last year, but actually the same (with a difference of -1 car) as it was in February 2024. After a slight "slump" at the beginning of the year, demand for trucks has returned to the average volumes recorded over the past eight months.

The majority of trucks were purchased on the domestic market: 83.8% (2.2 thousand units). 10.2% of used trucks (272 units) were brought from abroad.

Last month, 58 imported and 104 manufactured (or converted) trucks were purchased in Ukraine, a total of 162 trucks, a share of 6.1%.

The most popular trucks in the domestic market

Dump trucks (685 units), vans (444 units), vans (236 units), refrigerator vans (113 units), and side-mounted awnings (103 units) are also in demand on the domestic market.

Among individual truck models, the most frequently purchased last month were Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (115 units), ZIL-130 (103 units), Mercedes-Benz Vario (94 units), Mercedes-Benz Atego (87 units), and KamAZ- 5511 (80 pcs.).

Eleven of the 20 most popular trucks remain on this list as models of the Russian-Soviet automotive industry. At the same time, the average age of trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons sold on the domestic market in March 2024 was 22.5 years. The scale of the excise duty, which increases it by 40 or 50 times when a truck exceeds 5 or 8 years of age, respectively, deters Ukrainian businesses that need such transport from its mass import. This, in turn, does not make it possible to update the fleet with vehicles available to local buyers, even those that meet the Euro-5 environmental standard.

The most popular used trucks are imported from abroad

Vans with hydroboard (56 pcs), vans (42 pcs), refrigerated vans with hydroboard (28 pcs), container carriers (25 pcs), and on-board awning options were most often brought from abroad in March(25 pcs.).

Among individual models of trucks with a gross weight of more than 3.5 tons, the largest number of 46 vehicles was added to the Ukrainian fleet by Mercedes-Benz Atego, in addition to them, 44 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, 42 Iveco Daily, 26 MAN TGL, and 14 Renault Master arrived.

The most popular new trucks

Among the new trucks, vans were registered for the first time in March — 26 units, dump trucks — 13 units, truck cranes — 12 units, flatbed trucks — 2 units, all other types 1 unit each.

The most popular new truck was the Renault Master, bought in the amount of 10 units. The second line is occupied by Isizu AB5101 with a similar number of cars sold.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is the third, with a total of 6 units, and the same number of buyers were found on CargoBud 09252R.

Another pair with a similar number of cars sold (4 units each) is Iveco Daily and InterCargo Truck F16421.
