It is getting closer to the "statistical plateau". What electric cars did you buy in January?

Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of registrations of cars with electric power plants and identified the Top-20 models in three segments: import of used cars, domestic resale and purchase of new electric cars.

Dynamics of the electric car market

In January, Ukrainians bought 5,600 new and used electric cars. This is 172.2% more than in January 2023, and 9.1% less than in December 2023. And again we have to talk not about the record growth of this segment, but about the decrease in sales of electric cars in Ukraine. More than once, IDA analysts have mentioned that the segment of electric cars is approaching the so-called market saturation point, which in Ukrainian realities is determined not only by the number of potential buyers who have the required amount on hand, but also by the presence of home charging points, which are mainly used by owners of electric cars.

Auctions for used electric cars are not at record highs, and there are even some months in the past where volumes were higher. Only new electric cars have been registered in record numbers — but this part of the market is far behind its needs, so for now we are more likely to see a "late awakening" than a real increase in demand.

Dynamics of the electric car market in Ukraine, January 2023 — January 2024

Imported used electric cars were mainly traded ( 50.8%, 2,824 units).

In the domestic market, 1,841 purchase and sale agreements for electric vehicles were concluded, which is a share of 33.1% (1,841 units).

16.1% of electric cars (898 units) were bought new, which is 188 more than the previous sales. And so far, as already mentioned, this is the historical maximum for new electric cars.

Among the total number of electric cars in January , 99.2% were cars, 0.8% (42 units) were trucks.

As of the beginning of 2024, according to the Institute of Car Market Research, the total fleet of vehicles with electric engines is 89,645 units., registered in Ukraine (with the exception of those deregistered due to culling and export abroad): 87,390 cars, 2,250 trucks and 5 buses.

TOP electric cars on the domestic market

The first place in the domestic market with a significant gap from the closest competitors (which will have to be observed for quite some time) is occupied by the Nissan Leaf. In January, 438 purchase and sale agreements were concluded. "Leaf" became the most popular electric car in Ukraine primarily due to its availability, sufficient supply on the market and characteristics that suit many citizens.

On the second rung is the Tesla Model 3, for which 224 agreements were concluded, on the third is the Volkswagen e-Golf (126 units).

To the fourth place, pushing the Tesla Model S, which is now in the fifth position with a result of 116 pcs. the Volkswagen ID.4 crossover rose, ahead of the mentioned sedan by 3 cars.

Top new electric cars

The first place according to the results of January remains with Volkswagen ID.4 (296 units), with a clear quantitative advantage over all other participants in the rating. After all, the next, second place, which went to BYD Song Plus, has a much more modest result — a total of 88 units were registered. The third on the list is the Honda e:NS1 crossover (86 units), the fourth is another electric crossover (and again of Chinese origin) Toyota bZ4x (39 units). The fifth place in the model, which should be mentioned separately — because it is on the market relatively recently, and is positioned as the successor to the "Leaf". Given the fact that Nissan Ariya belongs to the SUV group, its price will be higher than that of a hatchback, so it is unlikely that it will be able to repeat the wild success (at least on the Ukrainian car market) of its "older brother", but there are already quite good results, as for a beginner -53 first registrations. Letʼs see how things will go with this newcomer, which will definitely make other electric crossovers nervous.
