Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in January 2024, described the market dynamics and identified the 20 most popular new passenger cars of the month.
Dynamics of the new car market
In January, Ukrainians purchased 4,700 new cars. This is 14.5% less than in December 2023, but 35.9% more than in January 2023.
Most new cars in January ( 94.1%, 4,440 units) were imported from abroad. The share of passenger cars manufactured in Ukraine by the method of large-unit assembly or converted from imported machine sets decreased significantly and amounted to 5.9% (280 units).
Buyers of new cars were mostly individuals (64.6%, 3,048 units), legal entities bought 1,672 cars (35.4%). For comparison, in general, in 2023, the share of firm buyers was 33.5%, i.e.in January, legal entities bought new cars in the usual volumes, but less actively than at the end of the year, when the share of legal entities reached 43.2%.
During the past month, the largest number of new cars were registered in the city of Kyiv (1,614 units, 34.2%) and the Kyiv region (493 units, 10.4%) — which traditionally accounts for almost half of the total volume of the new passenger car market. Also in the leaders of Dnipropetrovsk (378 units, 8%), Odessa (276 units, 5.8%) and Lviv (similarly to Odesa region — 276 units, 5.8%) oblasts.
The fewest new cars were registered in Donetsk (10), Volyn (53), Sumy (54) and Chernivtsi (58) regions. Luhansk region this time falls into statistical samples with a zero result.
The most popular new cars
Most often, in January, as in previous months, buyers of new cars chose Toyota (769 units, 16.3%). Second place is held by Volkswagen (514 units, 10.9%).
In third place, with a small margin, is Renault (498 units, 10.6%), followed by Skoda (326 units, 6.9%). Nissan closes the top five with a result of 276 cars and a share of 4.2%.
The first position in the rating of new cars was again taken by Renault Duster (412 units), in the usual version for the general market. The model of the same name will once again be among the most popular new passenger cars in January, on the 11th position, but already in the performance of a special vehicle for the needs of the police (according to the total number from various enterprises that converted this crossover).
The second place is behind the Volkswagen ID.4 electric crossover (296 units), followed by the Toyota RAV4 (288 units) with a slight difference in the number. on the fourth step — Skoda Scala (127 units), Mazda CX-5 (109 units) is fifth. It is worth noting that this time very few cars of local production made it to the Top 20 — usually there are more of them, but currently among the specialized ones (and converted by a Ukrainian enterprise) only "Duster" is used for the needs of the police.

Among the new passenger cars manufactured or converted in Ukraine and registered in January, the most popular was the Skoda Kodiaq crossover (71 units), manufactured at the Transcarpathian Evrokar plant, and the Renault Duster for police use (37 units), which received a new GAS index- 801RDS, and another version of the same "Duster" for the police, with the index SKS-RDS02 (31 pcs.).
