Trucks over 3.5 tons: what was the demand for in December?

Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in Ukraine in December and identified the top models in three segments of trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons (except tractor-trailers): used import, domestic resale and purchase of new cars, including those converted in Ukraine .

Truck market dynamics

In December, Ukrainian carriers purchased a total of 2.6 thousand trucks with a gross weight of more than 3.5 tons. This is 58% more than in the same period last year, but 1.1% less than in November-2023. After a peak in sales in August, demand for trucks fell, then recovered somewhat in the previous month, before falling again.

The majority of trucks were purchased on the domestic market: 79.8% (2.1 thousand units). Used 8.7% of trucks (229 units) were brought from abroad.

Last month, 55 imported and 245 manufactured or converted trucks were purchased in Ukraine (a total of 300 trucks, 11.4% ).

The most popular trucks in the domestic market

Dump trucks (606 units), vans (574 units), flatbed trucks (182 units), platforms (94 units), and refrigerated vans (93 units) remain the most popular in the domestic market.

According to the results of last month, Ford Transit (198 units), Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (97 units) were most often bought, and ZIL-130 (72 units) was among the five most popular 3.5+T trucks on the domestic market., "classic" KamAZ-5320 (70 units), and similar to the 130th ZIL MMZ 554 dump truck (69 units).

Ten of the 20 most popular trucks were models of the Russian-Soviet automobile industry. At the same time, the average age of trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons sold on the domestic market in December 2023 was 21.2 years. Considering that the pace of replenishment of the car fleet in this segment is relatively insignificant, in addition, the new year has come, that is, the production years for cars no older than 5 years have shifted again, as required by our legislation, in order not to receive "penal" amounts of excise duty upon import, you should not hope for rapid "rejuvenation" in this segment. As well as the quick removal from circulation of morally and physically outdated, far from ecological and safe trucks produced in Soviet times.

The most popular used trucks are imported from abroad

Vans with hydroboards (52 units), vans (29 units), flatbed trailers (27 units), container carriers (23 units), and refrigerator vans with hydraulic units (16 units) were most often brought from abroad in December. .

Among individual models of trucks with a gross weight of more than 3.5 tons, the Ukrainian car fleet was replenished the most by the Iveco Daily (40 units), in second place — Mercedes-Benz Atego (33 units), followed by the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (25 pc.).

MAN TGL (20 units) and Renault Master (16 units) also made it to the top five most popular imported trucks.

The most popular new trucks

Among new imported trucks, 19 vans, 9 dump trucks, 7 mobile cranes, as well as 6 garbage trucks and 2 flatbed trucks were registered for the first time in December.

The most popular new truck was converted by the Ukrainian enterprise Volkswagen Crafter, which received a new name CKC FT5 and will continue to serve in the police. The second in number is the Reform 0405032G collection van (based on Ford Transit), also converted by a Ukrainian enterprise: 20 of these were registered. The third place was won by a truck with an on-board platform and a UMZ Modus Fass i manipulator crane (20 units), the fourth place went to Renault Master (11 units), and the fifth place was a van with an Isuzu AB5101 hydroboard (10 units).
