Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in September 2023, described the market dynamics and identified the 15 most popular new passenger cars of the month.
Dynamics of the new car market
In September, Ukrainians bought 5.8 thousandnew cars. This is slightly less (by 3.3% ) than in August 2023, but 65.7% more than in September 2022. Thus, at present, the average monthly indicators of new car registrations are about 60% of the volumes that were in Ukraine until February 24, 2022.
In total, from January to September 2023, Ukrainians registered 45,700 new cars for the first time, which is 59.2% more than in the same period of 2022.
Most new cars in August ( 91.9%, 5,359 units) were imported from abroad. The share of passenger cars manufactured in Ukraine by the method of large-unit assembly or converted from imported machine kits was 8.1% (470 units).
Buyers of new cars in August were mostly individuals (68.6%, 3,997 units), and legal entities bought 1,832 cars (31.4%).
The largest number of new cars were registered last month in the city of Kyiv (2,113 units) and the Kyiv region (756 units) — together, this is almost half ( 49.2% ) of the total number of new cars registered for the first time in September. They were also actively registered in Dnipropetrovsk (472), Odesa (369) and Lviv (345) regions.

The most popular new imported cars
Most often, in September, as in the previous month, when buying a new passenger car, Ukrainians chose Toyota (932 units, 16%). The second place was taken by the Volkswagen brand (671 units, 11.5%).
The BMW brand rose by one position (496 units, 8.5%), thus taking third place. Skoda also added one step (456 units, 7.8%). Rounding out the top five is Renault (377 units, 6.5%).
For the first time, the electric car became the leader in sales of new cars: Volkswagen ID.4, of which there were as many as 342 units. However, all of them are not the official European version of this model, but the Chinese one, which is manufactured in Foshan (FAW-Volkswagen plant) under the name ID.4 Crozz and Antiny (SAIC Volkswagen plant, under the name ID.4 X). That is, the primacy on the Ukrainian market is currently occupied by a Chinese electric car, imported with the help of the so-called "gray" import — that is, not by official dealers of the corresponding brand.
Second place, as last month, is occupied by Toyota RAV-4 (326 units). Renault Duster (248 units) fell to the third step. The fourth step was taken by the Mazda CX-5 (161 units), and the fifth place by the Hyundai Tucson (150 units).
At the same time, the trend towards crossovers will continue to persist on the market: the majority of them in the top 20 will continue to be 15 civilian and one police.
