25 years: The average age of trucks in the domestic market continues to increase. Top models

Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in Ukraine in July and identified the top models in three segments of trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons (except tractor-trailers): used import, domestic resale and purchase of new cars, including those converted in Ukraine .

Truck market dynamics

In July, Ukrainians purchased 2,700 trucks with a gross weight of more than 3.5 tons (excluding tractors). This is 42.1% more than in the same period last year, and almost as much as in June 2023 ( +0.3 ).

Most of the trucks were purchased on the domestic market: 86.2% (2.3 thousand units). Used 6.8% of trucks (182 units) were brought from abroad.

More new trucks were purchased in July: 63 imported (the highest figure in the last 12 months) and 120 converted in Ukraine (a total of 186 units, 7% ).

The most popular trucks in the domestic market

In July, dump trucks (758 units), vans (404 units), flatbed trucks (284 units), platforms (118 units) and refrigerated vans (96 units) remain the most popular in the domestic market.

For many months in a row, trucks based on Mercedes-Benz T1/T2 remain the leader of domestic resales. In June, an agreement was reached regarding these166 purchase and sale agreements. Despite the fact that these models were discontinued more than 20 years ago, Ukrainians actively buy them, primarily due to the difficult economic situation and the inability to purchase a newer car. The platform of these models is used for various superstructures, additional attachments are installed and converted for special needs, despite their respectable age.

The second place remains the Soviet-Russian KamAZ 5320 (113 units). The third step was taken by the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (100 deals), which is also used as a platform for various add-ons.

The fourth place was taken by the Mercedes-Benz Atego (82 deals), and the top 5 most popular trucks in June are closed by the Mercedes-Benz Atego (82 deals).

It is noteworthy that 10 of the 20 most popular trucks were models of the Russian-Soviet automobile industry. At the same time, the average age of trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons sold on the domestic market in July 2023 was 25 years — 0.3 years more than last month, and as much as 2.4 years more than in July 2022. Due to the low purchasing power, it is difficult to purchase a new car to renew the car fleet, and it is difficult to bring a used one from abroad due to legal restrictions: there is a restriction of the ecological standard not lower than "Euro-5", and it is profitable to bring only cars under 5 years old.

The most popular used trucks brought from abroad

Vans with hydroboards (44 pcs.), vans (21 pcs.) and container carriers (19 pcs.) were most often brought from abroad in July. Refrigerated vans (15 units) and awning platforms (14 units) were also popular.

In July , the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (27 units) returned to the first place in terms of popularity of used trucks. Used Mercedes-Benz Atego moved to the second step — 23 such units were brought. The third place was taken by MAN TGL (21 units), and the fourth place by Iveco Daily (18 units). Closes the top 5 MAN TGX (13 units).

The average age of imported used trucks over 3.5 tons first registered in June 2023 was 9.1 years, up 0.2 years from a month ago and down 2.1 years from July 2022.

The most popular new trucks

New cargo vans (34 units), dump trucks (15 units) and fuel tankers (5 units) were registered for the first time among new imported trucks in June. Also, for the first time, 5 new mobile cranes received license plates, as well as one refrigerated van with a hydroboard, a refrigerated van, a container car, and an on-board awning with a hydroboard.

The most popular new truck in June was the Volkswagen Crafter (15 units). The second place was taken by Renault Master (6 pcs.), and the third place by Scania G-Series (6 pcs.).

The leaders were Reform 0201022G (van based on Citroen Jumper, 10 units), AV SPLAV E2AA18H17-4025 (6 units) and SKS IVAT280-01BP (4 units).
