Small commercial equipment: what did you buy in June? Top 20 models

Experts of the Auto Market Research Institute analyzed vehicle registration statistics in Ukraine in June and identified the 20 most popular models of small commercial vehicles in three segments: used import, domestic resale, and new car purchases. Sales volumes are gradually returning to the market indicators that were before February 24, 2022.

LCV market dynamics

In June, Ukrainians purchased 5,400 light commercial vehicles with a total weight of up to 3.5 tons. This is 12.5% more than in the same period last year, and 3.8% more than in May 2023.

The majority of small commercial cars were purchased on the domestic market in May: 4,000 (73.9%). 931 used LCVs (17.3%) were brought from abroad.

436 new imported LCVs were sold, another 37 registered light trucks were converted by Ukrainian enterprises from imported chassis or machine sets. Overall, new LCV sales accounted for 8.8% of the total number of small commercial vehicles purchased.

The most popular LCVs in the domestic market

Used vans (2.9 thousand units), cargo and passenger vans (193 units), as well as side-mounted awnings (183 units), side-mounted vans (181 units) and refrigerated vans (88 units) were most in demand on the domestic market.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has held the unchanging leadership in the domestic market for many years in a row (554 units in June). The chassis of this car is used for various superstructures — from classic vans to refrigerators and other types of specialized equipment for small and medium-sized businesses. The Russian GAZ 3302 "Gazelle" (360 pcs.) again rose to second place in the rating. Such cars are chosen because of the still significant total number of these vehicles on the market, cheaper cost, as well as simplicity and cheapness of operation. With the beginning of a full-scale war, trade with the aggressor country, from where most of the spare parts for these cars were previously supplied, is prohibited, which will complicate the repair of cars of Russian brands. Therefore, the number of GAS on the market will inevitably decrease, gradually being replaced by imported analogues.

The third place was taken by Renault Master, the sales of which did not decrease quantitatively compared to last month, but the June figure was 353 units. — was able to secure only the 3rd position in the rating (-1 position).

Ford Transit (231 units) is on the fourth step, and the popular Renault Kangoo (216 units) is on the fifth.

The most popular used LCVs imported from abroad

Used vans (705 units), refrigerated vans (66 units), side-mounted awnings (47 units), vans with hydroboards (26 units) and platforms (17 units) were most often brought from abroad.

Renault Master remains the leader of imported used LCVs (228 units), Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is in second place (221 units), and Volkswagen Crafter (76 units) is in third place.

Renault Traffic (65 units) and Renault Kangoo (59 units) also entered the top 5.

It is interesting that the preferences of Ukrainians in used small commercial equipment from abroad are very stable: the rating of models almost does not change from month to month, quantitative indicators also change minimally. At the same time, the potential of this market segment is not sufficiently developed: it is profitable to import used LCVs from abroad only under the age of 5 years, because the excise tax is 40 times higher on everything older than that, which makes import economically unprofitable. Due to low purchasing power and lack of available financing programs, it is too difficult to purchase a new car, so buyers are forced to meet the demand by buying used LCV cars in the domestic market. Such a situation reduces choice, increases market prices and makes it obsolete.

The most popular new LCVs

Among the new small commercial vehicles, the most popular were vans (365 units), refrigerated vans (14 units), flatbed vans with a double cabin (10 units), flatbed vans with awnings (7 units) and cargo-passenger vans (6 units).

Renault Master became the leader of the new LCV segment in June, rising one step in the rating. 159 units of such models were registered for the first time.

In second place was Renault Express (64 units). Sales of Peugeot Partner increased (27 units), which made it possible to take 3rd place according to the results of June.

Fourth place was taken by Fiat Ducato (19 units), and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (17 units) rounds out the top five.
