Sales of small commercial equipment in May turned out to be a record. Top 15 models
Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in Ukraine in May and identified the 15 most popular models of small commercial vehicles in three segments: import of used cars, domestic resale and purchase of new cars. Sales of new small commercial equipment turned out to be a record.
LCV market dynamics
In May, Ukrainians purchased 5,200 light commercial vehicles with a total weight of up to 3.5 tons. This is 23.1% more than in the same period last year, and 7.7% more than in April 2023.
The majority of small commercial cars were purchased on the domestic market in May: 3.8 thousand (72.5%). 916 used LCVs (17.6%) were brought from abroad.
430 new imported LCVs were sold, another 88 registered light trucks were converted by Ukrainian enterprises from imported chassis or machine sets. Overall, new LCV sales accounted for 9.9% of the total number of small commercial vehicles purchased. This indicator turned out to be a record for the last 12 months — both quantitatively and in terms of share.
The most popular LCVs in the domestic market
Used vans (2.8 thousand units), side-mounted awnings (167 units), cargo-passenger ones (164 units), as well as flat-beds (121 units) and platforms (79 units) were most in demand on the domestic market.
For many years in a row, the unchanging first place in the domestic market has been held by the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (583 units in May). The chassis of this car is used for various superstructures — from classic vans to refrigerators and other types of specialized equipment for small and medium-sized businesses. The Renault Master (341 units), which is used in the same way as the previous model, in different body options and purposes, confidently holds the second place in the rating.
Interest in the Russian GAZ 3302 "Gazelle" still persists (272 units in May, 3rd place) due to the significant total number of these vehicles on the market. Previously, such cars were chosen due to their lower cost, simplicity and cheapness of operation, but with the beginning of a full-scale war, trade with the aggressor country is prohibited, from where most of the spare parts for these cars were previously supplied, which will inevitably lead to the complication of repairing cars of Russian brands. Therefore, the number of GAS on the market will inevitably decrease, gradually being replaced by imported analogues.

It is interesting that the preferences of Ukrainians in used small commercial equipment from abroad are very stable: the rating of models almost does not change from month to month, quantitative indicators also change minimally. At the same time, the potential of this market segment is not sufficiently developed: it is profitable to import used LCVs from abroad only under the age of 5 years, because the excise tax is 40 times higher on everything older than that, which makes import economically unprofitable. Due to low purchasing power and lack of available financing programs, it is too difficult to purchase a new car, so buyers are forced to meet the demand by buying used LCV cars in the domestic market. Such a situation reduces choice, increases market prices and makes it obsolete.
