Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in May 2023, described the market dynamics and identified the 15 most popular new passenger cars of the month.
Dynamics of the new car market
In May, Ukrainians purchased 5,800 new cars. This is 53.5% more than in May 2022 and 13.8% more than in April 2023. That is, the trend of increasing sales of new passenger cars in Ukraine continues. Before the start of the full-scale invasion, about 10,000 cars were sold every month, that is, the new car market today is already about 60% of this figure.
In total, from January to May 2023, Ukrainians registered 22,900 new cars for the first time, which is 48.7% more than in the same period of 2022.
Most new cars in May ( 87.9%, 5,118 units) were imported from abroad. The share of passenger cars manufactured in Ukraine using the large-node assembly method was 12.1% (703 units).
The largest number of new cars were registered last month in the city of Kyiv (2,196 units) and the Kyiv region (693 units) — together this is almost half ( 49.6% ) of the total number of new cars registered for the first time in May. Also, during the last month of spring, they were actively registered in Dnipropetrovsk (505), Odesa (396) and Lviv (320) regions.
The fewest new cars were registered for the first time in Luhansk (4 units) , Donetsk (9 units) , Kherson (21 units), Chernihiv (45 units) and Mykolaiv (51 units).regions
The most popular new imported cars
Most often, in May, as in the previous month, when buying a new passenger car, Ukrainians chose Toyota (759 units, 13%). The second place was taken by the Renault brand (526 units, 9%).
The Volkswagen brand rose to third place (526 units, 9%), and Hyundai was in fourth place (388 units, 6.7%). The Ukrainian brand SKS closes the top five (380 units, 6.5%). Under this brand, the Ukrainian company "Spets-Com-Service" produces special and specialized cars on imported chassis.
Top 15 most popular brands of new cars in May 2023
Among the models in the fifth month of 2023, the Renault Duster (415 units) remains the sales leader, with a large margin from the closest competitors. Toyota RAV-4 (269 units) took second place, as in April. The third step was taken by the police Toyota Corolla (206 units). Most of them (180 pcs.) are the TAC-26TP SCS model, converted by the previously mentioned Spets-Com-Service LLC.
The fourth place according to the results of May went to the electric Volkswagen ID.4 (176 units). Rounding out the top five is the Hyundai Tucson (162 units).
At the same time, the trend towards crossovers remains on the market: the majority of them in the top 15 will be 10 civilians and one police Renault Duster.

Among the new cars converted in Ukraine and registered in May, specialized cars were the most popular: police Toyota Corolla (206 units) and Renault Duster (145 units). Among the civilian models, the largest number was the Skoda Kodiaq (103 units), they are manufactured at the Transcarpathian Evrocar plant using the large-node assembly method.
