The new car market has recovered by 50% since the start of the Great War. Results of April
Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in April 2023, described the market dynamics and identified the 15 most popular new passenger cars of the month.
Dynamics of the new car market
In April, Ukrainians bought 5,000 new cars. This is 284.6% more than in April 2022 and the same as in February 2023. So, for now, it can be stated that the sales of new passenger cars have stabilized, and the average monthly sales figure has been fixed at the 5,000 mark. This is about half as much as before the start of the full-scale invasion, that is, the new car market has recovered by 50%.
In total, from January to April 2023, Ukrainians registered 17,100 new cars for the first time, which is 6.1% more than in the same period of 2022.
Most new cars in March ( 90.6%, 4,532 units) were imported from abroad. The share of passenger cars manufactured in Ukraine using the large-node assembly method was 9.4% (468 units).
During the past month, the most new cars were registered in Kyiv city (1,709 units) and Kyiv region (689 units), as well as Dnipropetrovsk (391 units), Lviv (330 units) and Odesa (309 units) regions.
The fewest new cars were registered for the first time in Luhansk (4 units) , Kherson (10 units), Donetsk (12 units) , Volyn (39 units) and Chernihiv (43 units).regions
The most popular new imported cars
Most often, in March, Ukrainians chose the Toyota brand when buying a new car (634 units, 12.7%). The second place was taken by the Renault brand (471 units, 9.4%).
The BMW brand returned to third place (471 units, 8.4%), pushing Volkswagen to fourth place (420 units, 8.2%). In fifth place was Skoda, which included registrations of both imported cars of this brand and those made in Ukraine(a total of 357 units, 7.1%).
Among the models in the fourth month of 2023, the Renault Duster (387 units) remains the sales leader, with a large margin from the closest competitors. Compared to last monthʼs rating, Toyota RAV-4 (200 units) rose from fifth place to second place, pushing Mazda CX-5 (168 units) to third place.
Nissan Qashqai made a jump from the fourteenth position, taking fourth place (145 units) according to the results of April. Rounding out the top five is the BMW X1, 140 of which were registered together with its electric version, the iX1.
Another interesting trend is that the sales of the electric Volkswagen ID.4 continue to fall (125 units in April), two months ago it was in second place in the rating and had every chance to lead it.
Crossovers and SUVs continue to occupy the majority of new models chosen by Ukrainians. Among the fifteen popular models in April, there are only 3 classic passenger cars.

- Skoda Octavia — 82 pcs.
Among the new passenger cars assembled in Ukraine and registered in April, the most were Skoda Kodiaq (128 units), police cars based on Renault Duster (96 units) and Skoda Karoq (51 units).
