Where and how much are used cars brought from abroad? Analytics

After the cancellation of the so-called "zero" customs clearance, the import of used cars from abroad decreased significantly, but today Ukrainians bring about 10,000 used cars every month. Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed import statistics and determined from which countries Ukrainians import them, the average price, and how much money they spend on cars from abroad.

Cars from America again make up the majority of imports

From September to December 2022, 60,800 used cars with mileage passed customs clearance. During January-February 2022 — another 20.2 thousand. In total, 81,000 cars were brought to Ukraine over the past six months. Of them, 61% (49.7 thousand) were brought from the countries of the European Union, another 30% — from the countries of America (24.3 thousand). 4% of cars (3.3 thousand) were exported from Great Britain, 3% (2.1 thousand) from China ; 1% of used passenger cars came from Georgia (about 600 units). Other regions of the world took the rest.

At the same time, the share of "Americans" in the market, after a maximum of 47% in September 2022, is decreasing for the fifth month in a row. According to the results of February, this indicator was 20%.

If we analyze the trends in the purchase of used cars from abroad in terms of countries in particular, and not regions in general, then the USA (29.5%, 23.9 thousand), Poland ( 20.3%, 16.4 thousand) and Germany (17.7%, 14.3 thousand).

How much money did you spend on used cars from abroad?

From September 2022 to January 2023, Ukrainians purchased used cars abroad with a total customs value of 21.1 billion hryvnias. According to todayʼs official currency exchange rate, this is about $577 million. Of them in January-February 2023 — 5.2 billion hryvnias ( $142 million).

Most of the funds were spent on the purchase of cars from the USA (over 9 billion hryvnias). Poland took second place. Ukrainians spent 2.9 billion hryvnias on cars exported from this country over the past 6 months. Germany took third place with a total customs value of 2.4 billion hryvnias for used cars imported from there.

It is interesting that used cars from China took fourth place (2.17 billion UAH). Lithuania closes the top five (0.43 billion UAH).

Since in practice, in most cases, customs officials determine the customs value of cars subjectively, using the 6th (reserve) method, with the help of additional sources of information, the real value of cars may be even higher.

How much do used cars from abroad cost?

The main trend of Ukrainian imports remains unchanged: affordable cars worth $1-2 thousand have the greatest demand among Ukrainians. According to the results of the last 6 months, such were 30.4% of the total number of imports. In general, 81.1% of all imported cars during September-2022 — February-2023 cost less than $10 thousand.

The average price of an imported car with mileage during this period was $7,128. At the same time, over the past 6 months, it was the lowest in November ($6,518), the highest in September ($7,745). In February 2023, used cars from abroad cost an average of $6,614. For comparison, this is three times more than in July 2022, when this indicator was at the level of $2,190.

In general, due to the low purchasing power and the difficult economic situation in the country, the majority of Ukrainians are able to purchase an inexpensive car. Since high customs fees make it economically unprofitable to import a large part of used cars in the affordable price category, buyers often refuse to buy a used car from abroad and prefer cars in the domestic market.

In which countries are the cheapest cars?

Used cars brought by Ukrainians from the UAE turned out to be the most expensive. Their average cost was $31.3 thousand. China was in second place (average cost $30.4 thousand), and Hungary was in third place ($14.6 thousand). Also, the average price was quite high in cars from Luxembourg ( $13.1 thousand) and Slovenia ( $12.4 thousand).

Used cars from Finland ($2.9 thousand), Latvia ($3.1 thousand), Estonia ($3.2 thousand), Great Britain ($3.4 thousand) and Switzerland ($3.6) had the lowest average customs value thousand).
