Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of registration operations in February 2023 and determined what is happening with the sales of used cars. According to the results of the second month of the year, sales of used cars in Ukraine have stabilized: the indicators almost repeat the results of January.
In February, Ukrainians bought 77,500 used cars. This is -21% less than in the same period last year in 2022 and the same as in January-2023.
At the same time, the share of internal resales is consistently high: 83% of the total number of used car sales transactions.
The share of imported cars with mileage from abroad amounted to 17% of the total number of purchased used cars. For comparison, in February 2022, this indicator was recorded at the level of 30.8%.
Internal resales
On the domestic market in February, Ukrainians concluded 64,400 sales and purchase agreements for used cars. This indicator turned out to be −5.3% lower than in February 2022, and −0.8% lower than in January 2023.
The largest number of registration transactions on the domestic market was recorded in the city of Kyiv : 9.7 thousand. Together with the Kyiv region, which took third place in the rating with 6.6 thousand registrations, they make up 21% of the total number of used cars sold in February.
Dnipropetrovsk (7.1 thousand), Lviv (5.9 thousand) and Odesa (5.5 thousand) oblasts are also among the top 5 most active regions in terms of domestic resale of used cars. This picture completely repeats the trends of previous months.
The smallest number of agreements was concluded in regions whose territories are temporarily occupied or where active hostilities are taking place: Luhansk (330 agreements), Kherson (424 agreements) and Donetsk (766 agreements) regions. Also, Chernihivska (1.6 thousand) was included in the top 5 regions with the smallest number of used car sales.and Mykolaivsk (1.4 thousand transactions) region.
Import of used cars
In February 2023, 13,100 used cars were brought from abroad. This indicator is -56.5% less than in February 2022 and 4.4% more than in January 2022.
Traditionally, used cars from abroad were most actively registered in Lviv region (1.6 thousand units), Kyiv (1.1 thousand units), Rivne region (918 units), Kyiv region (912 units) and Vinnytsia region ( 878 units) regions.
Donetsk (57 units), Luhansk (57 units), Kherson (89 units), Mykolaiv (181 units) and Zaporizhzhya (193 units) regions registered the fewest "freshly driven" cars.
