The peak of tractor unit sales has passed, but the market set a record: 2022 results

The truck tractor market set a record in 2022: despite the war, sales increased by 19%. Thus, this market segment turned out to be one of two , which demonstrated growth in the difficult past year. Experts of the Auto Market Research Institute determined in which regions cars of this category and the top 25 models are most often bought in the domestic market, among "freshly driven" and new truck tractors.

Dynamics of the truck tractor market

In December, Ukrainians bought 3,500 new and used carstruck tractors. This is 12.2% more than in December 2021 and 7% less than in November 2022.

In total, during 2022, Ukrainians purchased 33,600 truck tractors. This is 19.3% more than in 2021. Thus, sales of semi-trailer trucks is one of the two segments of the automobile market (along with electric vehicles) that showed growth at the end of the year.

The majority of trucks ( 52.7%, 17.7 thousand) in 2022 were brought used from abroad. 42.6% (14.3 thousand) tractors were purchased on the domestic market, and only 4.7% (1.6 thousand) were bought new.

The peak of tractor unit sales was recorded in September: 4,400 cars were sold then. The growth of this segment started in June due to the lack of rolling stock in the parks due to the change of logistics routes. The temporary shutdown of the ports led to the fact that almost all imported goods began to be delivered by land, with the help of road transport, which turned out to be insufficient. That is why Ukrainian carriers actively replenished their fleet. In October, sales in this segment began to decline, which continues for the third month in a row.

In which regions are the most bought tractors

In 2022, the largest number of new and used truck tractors were registered in the Lviv region (3.2 thousand), which accounted for 9.6% of the total number. Another 3,000 cars of this category underwent registration in Odesa region ( 9.1% ).

Third place in the rating was taken by the Kyiv region (2.5 thousand, 7.4%). On the fourth step is the city of Kyiv (2.4 thousand, 7.2%), and Zakarpattia Oblast closes the first five (2.3 thousand, 6.9%).

The fewest tractors were registered in Luhansk (77 units), Kherson (84 units) and Donetsk (92 units) regions.

TOP of the most popular truck tractors on the domestic market

DAF XF turned out to be the most popular tractor unit on the domestic market in 2022. The number of sales of cars of this model (4.1 thousand) is almost 2.5 times higher than that of the second-placed model — Volvo FH (1.7 thousand).

Renault Magnum is in third place (1.7 thousand), MAN TGX is fourth (1.6 thousand), and Renault Premium (1.1 thousand) rounds out the top five.

The average age of truck tractors in the domestic market was 13.5 years. Most of these cars were purchased by individuals (81.6%).

The DAF XF (8.8 thousand) became the leader of "freshly driven" semi-trailer trucks according to the results of 2022. MAN TGX was in second place (6.6 thousand), and Volvo FH was in third place (3.9 thousand).

Fourth place was taken by Renault Magnum (2.2 thousand), and fifth place by Scania R-Series (1.8 thousand).

It is interesting that the absolute majority of truck tractors ( 96.7% ) were imported by legal entities. The average age of used tractors from abroad in 2022 was 9.8 years.

TOP new truck tractors

The MAN TGX (354 units) took the first place among new semi-trailer tractors according to the results of 2022. Volvo FH was in second place (328 units), and Mercedes-Benz Actros (261 units) was in third place.

DAF XF (224 units) and Scania R-Series (103 units) also entered the top five.
