Against all odds: in 2022 the electric car market will grow by 45%

Despite Russiaʼs terrorist attacks on energy infrastructure, during 2022 Ukrainians continued to buy electric cars. Even more: the year turned out to be a record for the Ukrainian electric car market, and a record was even set in December: the largest number of new electric car registrations. Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research determined in which regions electric cars are most often bought, as well as the top 25 models in each of the segments.

Dynamics of the electric car market

In December, Ukrainians bought more than 2,300 new and used carselectric cars This is +32.9% more than in December 2021 and 6.4% more than in November 2022.

In total, during 2022, Ukrainians purchased 22,500 cars with an electric engine. This is 45.3% more than in 2021 and, in general, a record number of sales of electric cars on the Ukrainian car market. Thus, despite Russiaʼs terrorist attacks on energy infrastructure, Ukrainians continue to buy electric vehicles.

Most of the electric cars ( 49.2%, 11.1 thousand), purchased in 2022, were brought used from abroad ; another 40.8% (9.2 thousand) were purchased on the domestic market. Only 10% (2.3 thousand) electric cars were bought new.

At the same time, the share of new electric cars is growing for the fourth month in a row, and in December it was recorded at the maximum level: 14.2%. In the same month, another quantitative record was set: 324 new electric cars received Ukrainian license plates for the first time. This is a record number of sales of new electric cars.

In which regions are most people buying electric cars?

In 2022, the largest number of new and used cars were registered in the city of Kyiv (4.7 thousand), which is 20.3% of the total number. In the Lviv region during the past year, 2.4 thousand Ukrainians ( 10.3% ) became owners of electric cars. Another 2,000 electric cars ( 8.6% ) were registered in the Kyiv region.

Electric cars were also actively bought in Odesa (1.9 thousand, 8.3% ) and Dnipropetrovsk (1.9 thousand, 8.1% ) regions.

The fewest electric vehicles were registered in the Luhansk (36), Donetsk (40) and Chernihiv (65) regions.

TOP of the most popular electric cars on the domestic market

The long-time leader Nissan Leaf became the most popular electric car on the domestic market in 2022. The number of purchase and sale agreements of this model (3 thousand) is five times higher than that of the nearest competitor — Tesla Model 3 (651 agreements).

Well, in third place was another Tesla — Model S (515 deals). The fourth place was taken by the Volkswagen E-Golf (486 deals), and the Volkswagen ID.4 (474 deals) rounds out the top five.

Nissal Leaf (2,269 units) remains the leader of "freshly driven" electric cars in 2022. The second place was taken by Tesla Model 3 (953 units), and the third place was taken by Volkswagen E-Golf (871 units).

The popular Volkswagen ID.4 is in fourth place (862 units), and Renault Zoe (688 units) rounds out the top five.

The first place according to the results of 2022 was taken by the electric Volkswagen ID.4 (102 units). This includes both the European and Chinese versions of this model.

The second place was taken by Honda M-NV (240 units), and the third place by BMW iX (171 units). The fourth position was taken by the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (131 units), and the fifth by the Audi E-Tron (114 units).
