The team of the Auto Market Research Institute regularly analyzes the statistical data of the Automoto.ua aggregator , which collects the sale announcements of ALL cars from 100 auto sites in Ukraine, in order to monitor these changes and track trends. This time, experts determined how average prices for popular models changed in November, how much the Ukrainian car market has aged, and how the rating of the most popular brands in online car sales has changed.
The price structure does not change
In the future, the absolute majority of sales announcements on the Ukrainian market will consist of passenger cars worth up to $10,000. Compared to October, the share of such cars in November almost did not change: they continue to make up the absolute majority — 76% of the total number. The largest number of sales offers is in the $1-2 thousand category: 10.8% (in October, the indicator was at the level of 10.6%).
In general, the price structure of the Ukrainian car market directly depends on the purchasing power of Ukrainians, which remains at a low level.
Popular cars have become slightly cheaper
In November, the average price of a used passenger car for sale on the Internet, as in October, remains a record low in 2022: $5,300. At the beginning of the year, as well as during May-July, the average price of a passenger car on sale was $6,000. Therefore, the number of ads for the sale of cheaper cars does not decrease.
There is no tendency for second-hand cars to become cheaper on the market, because there are no reasons for this, say the Institute of Car Market Research. Thus, of the 10 most popular models, which Ukrainians most often sold on the Internet in November, only two slightly decreased in price: BMW 5 Series (from $6,600 to $6,000 ) and BMW 3 Series (from $5,700 to $5,550 ). Both cars were popular during the so-called "zero" clearance period, so the decrease in their average price may be due to the large number of sales advertisements and correspondingly high competition from sellers.
Skoda Octavia rose in price by $100 on average (from $6,700 to $6,800), the average price of other models remained at the same level as in October.
In general, the October rating of average prices for the most popular models on sale on the Internet looks like this:
- Volkswagen Passat — $6,700
- Skoda Octavia — $6,800 (+$100)
- Volkswagen Golf — $4,900
- VAZ 2109/21099 — $1,500
- Daewoo Lanos — $2,500
- Renault Megane — $6,500
- VAZ 2106 — $800
- BMW 5 Series — $6,000 (-$600)
- Opel Astra — $5,000
- BMW 3 Series — $5,550 (-$150)
The car market is aging
In June and July, when the market saw the maximum number of offers for the sale of "newly used" cars without paying customs payments, the average age of cars in the sales announcements was 15.2 years — the lowest figure in 2022. In November, this indicator was on the contrary the highest: 16.7 years. That is, the car market of Ukraine continues to age — for the fourth month in a row, since the cancellation of the so-called "zero" customs clearance.
The number of cars manufactured after 1992 (that is, older than 30 years) continues to increase: their share increased from 11.7% in October to 12% in November. This is also the maximum in 2022.
More VAZs are sold
As can be seen from the brand rating, Soviet-Russian cars of the VAZ brand are increasing their share among sales ads on the Internet. In November, they were already 11.8% — this is the maximum indicator of this brand in 2022. Back in June, there were 7.2% of such cars, and the first place was occupied by Volkswagen with a share of 11.5%. In November, cars of this brand remained in second place with a share of 10.6%. Renault passenger cars (6.3%) are in third place in the rating.
The share of VAZs is increasing, primarily due to a decrease in the sales of cars of Western brands. There were more of the latter when the car market was actively filled with used cars from abroad during the "zero" customs clearance.
In general, the ranking of the most popular brands that Ukrainians sold on the Internet in October 2022 looks like this:
- VAZ — 11.8%
- Volkswagen — 10.6%
- Renault — 6.3%
- Opel — 5.1%
- Mercedes-Benz — 5%
- Ford — 4.7%
- Skoda — 4.4%
- BMW — 4.4%
- Audi — 3.5%
- Daewoo — 3.3%
- Toyota — 3.3%
- Nissan — 3.2%
- Hyundai — 3.1%
- Mazda — 2.4%
- Chevrolet — 2.3%
Conclusion
The main trends of November highlighted by the experts of the Institute of Car Market Research and the Automoto.ua team:
- Budget cars worth $1-2 thousand are mostly sold on the online car market.
- The average price of used cars on sale is consistently low ($5,300), there are no reasons for its sharp fluctuations.
- Only two BMW models, which were actively imported during the period of "zero" customs clearance, became cheaper.
- The average age of cars on sale is increasing for the fourth month in a row.
- The share of ads for the sale of VAZ passenger cars is increasing due to the decrease in the number of ads for the sale of cars of Western manufacturers.
