Wholesale prices for used cars in the EU continue to slowly decline

According to the results of the observations, the results of which were summed up at the end of September 2025 by AUTO1 Group analysts, the wholesale price index in Europe decreased slightly, from 140.9 in August to the current value of 140.1, which is a decrease of 0.6% compared to the previous month. September was the third month during which the index decreased, which at the end of the third quarter showed a decrease in prices by 1.3% compared to the end of the second quarter.

The index has increased by 3.6% since the beginning of the year, increasing from 135.2 in January to 140.1 in September. Compared to September 2024, used car prices increased by 2.4% year-on-year.

Powertrain Price Index

All segments of the automotive market recorded year-on-year price increases compared to September 2024. However, the dynamics in the third quarter were mixed. Prices for hybrids and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) continued to rise, while prices for cars with gasoline and diesel engines decreased.

Here is a detailed breakdown of the changes by powerplant type:

  • Gasoline cars: Despite the largest drop in the third quarter (−2.5%), gasoline car prices remain the highest among all fuel types (index in September — 117.7). Year-on-year prices are 2.9% higher.
  • Diesel cars: Prices fell by 1.3% in the third quarter, reaching an index value of 111.9 in September. Year-on-year, prices for diesel versions increased by 2.4%.
  • Hybrid cars: Prices stabilized in the third quarter, increasing slightly (+0.3%) to an index of 109.1. However, hybrids showed the largest annual growth of all powertrain types (+3.6%).
  • Electric Vehicles: Prices in this sector showed the largest increase in the third quarter (+1.5%). Their index in September 2025 was 103.9, which is 2.7% more than the previous year.

It is determined based on an analysis of over 5 million used car sales transactions across Europe. The starting point of this index is January 2015 with a base value of 100, against which all subsequent values are determined. Fresh cuts are published monthly.
