The electric car segment is the youngest in the Ukrainian car market. It is only being formed, and therefore it is especially interesting to observe its development. Analysts of the Institute for Car Market Research, based on statistics of the first registrations of electric cars in Ukraine, have compiled a rating of the ten most popular brands over the past years.
As of today, the Ukrainian car fleet includes over 150,000 BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles), mostly passenger cars. Of these, 83% are used vehicles, imported mostly from the USA, Europe, and China. Only 17% of electric vehicles are receiving license plates as new for the first time.

Now about the brands: first of all, it is worth considering that 10 years ago the prices for electric cars were many times higher than they are now, in addition, there were queues for some models, with a waiting time of several months. In addition, the choice of options was much more limited than today — manufacturers did not actively compete with the then market pioneers, such as Tesla, watching from the sidelines to see how it would all end. However, it did not end (except for some startups ), and most well-known brands still had to present to the public several electrified, or even newly developed, electric cars.
Nissan has held the lead in this category on the Ukrainian car market for a long time, thanks in fact to one “popular” model — Leaf. An affordable price, sufficient interior space, a small, but still sufficient range for most people, have made this model the most popular on the Ukrainian car market and, accordingly, in the electric car fleet. Currently, almost a quarter of all electric cars on Ukrainian roads are Nissan Leaf. However, for the second year in a row, Tesla has been the number one brand. Some of the best characteristics, maintainability and reliability, wide functionality and unique style have made Model 3 and Model Y market leaders.
The third this time is Volkswagen, partly thanks to the Leafʼs competitor — the e-Golf, the prices for which in Europe have dropped to a level acceptable to the Ukrainian buyer, as well as thanks to the ID.4 crossover and some other representatives of the ID line.

Hyundai continues to increase its share, thanks to the Kona and Ioniq series, and another Korean brand, KIA, has significantly improved its position, helped by the Niro and the “EV-X” series.
Disappearing from the Top 10, but promising to return in the following years, Ford and BMW, as well as Mercedes-Benz, which follows just after Chevrolet. In general, if we were to continue this yearʼs list 10 places further, we would see the following brands: Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Honda, Ford, Jaguar, Opel, Peugeot, Porsche, Polestar and Volvo.
But the chances of returning to the Top 10 are minimal (or zero) for BIO Auto, Fiat, and Smart (at least until the new electric model line gains momentum). Also, if it werenʼt for the price reduction on the Bolt EV, who knows if Chevrolet would have managed to stay in the top ten.
But there is also a debutant: for the first time on this slide, ZEEKR appeared — a premium electric brand from the Chinese concern Geely, which is gaining momentum in Europe. In Ukraine, the most frequently registered crossovers are ZEEKR 001 and ZEEKR X, which combine a bright design, powerful characteristics and an attractive price compared to competitors.
The quantitative gap between the participants of the given Top 10 for the current year is such that it does not promise significant changes in the following periods. However, if such changes occur, we will definitely report about it in the reviews.
