The last kilometer: Which cars were most often scrapped last year in Ukraine?

Scrapping is the last documentary operation that occurs in the life of a car. After this stage, the vehicle can no longer be registered again and returned to operation. That is, there is actually only one option left — for disposal, or at least for the metal part of the structure to be melted down.

Last year, a total of 33.5 thousand vehicles were scrapped (according to the State Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs). And this is a record — Ukrainians have never gotten rid of their cars so quickly. For comparison, in 2023, 20.7 thousand vehicles were scrapped, in 2022 — 12.8 thousand. Here is a list of the number of individual types of vehicles that left our roads forever last year:

  • Passenger cars — 24,885 units.
  • Cargo — 5,568 pcs.
  • Buses — 953 pcs.
  • Motorcycles — 909 pcs.
  • Trailers — 525 pcs.
  • Semi-trailers — 439 pcs.
  • Mopeds — 203 pcs.
  • Specialized — 5 pcs.
  • Quad bikes — 5 pcs.
  • Tricycles — 4 pcs.

The dynamics of the frequency of applications for this operation to the Ministry of Internal Affairsʼ TSC should theoretically be equal from month to month, with the usual natural or seasonal fluctuations in the number. But this did not happen last year — due to changes in the rules for mobilizing transport from private owners (when there is more than one car — it can be seized for defense needs), many car owners began to look for documents for abandoned cars and remove them from the register so as not to have too many registered cars.

Another line — cars that were once sold "by proxy" or "by transfer of technical passport", contacts with the actual owners were lost (or not lost, but they did not want to re-register them for themselves). Some submitted such vehicles for scrapping, not wanting to check the effect of the new mobilization rules on themselves. In general, this explains not only the peak areas in the following diagram, but also the record number of scrapped ones. Of course, we should not forget about military operations — this tragedy also contributed to the total number — as a result of enemy strikes, many cars were irretrievably destroyed. Standard reasons for scrapping include aging of the car and serious damage in a road accident.

Dynamics of vehicle scrapping in 2024

The volume of applications for scrapping vehicles by region correlates with the activity of the car market and local saturation of the fleet with vehicles. The largest number of applications for scrapping was submitted in the Kyiv region — 2,884. The second place in this ranking was taken by the capital with a total of 2,707 vehicles written off forever. The third result was shown by motorists of the Dnipropetrovsk region, who handed over the license plates of 2,537 cars.

The model rating is headed by the “penny” VAZ 2101. The model, the production of which began in 1970, and the average age of the copies that are still on the road is 45 years. Considering that the average age of the “odd ones” that went to be scrapped was 46 years, those who are still trying to drive, do not have long left. Over the past year, cars of this model said “come on, bye!” 1666 times.

The second place in terms of the number of replenishments of scrap metal acceptance bases was taken by the VAZ 2106 “six” with a total of 1,645 units. Although the model seems to be newer, its production began in 1976, just under 50 years ago, and the average age of “living” cars is 36 years, the difference between those that were actively written off here is also not very contrasting — the rejected ones were on average 38 years old, which also hints that in the coming years, rolled metal for metal fences, water pipes and packaging for preservation will be actively produced from remelted “sixes” — at one time (before the opening of the “iron curtain”) almost the flagship in the territory of the then union.

The leaders are not left feeling sad by another representative of the “classic” VAZ family, the 2107 model. 1,278 of these were sent “on their last journey.” After all, most of the models on this list are products of the Volga Automobile Plant, with the exception of Daewoo Lanos, ZAZ-Tavria, GAZelle, and Moskvich-2140.

In general, the average age of scrapped cars was 30 years, and trucks — 29. Since cars can be scrapped not only due to complete exhaustion of the resource and old age, but also due to, for example, complete destruction in an accident, not very old premium cars can also be written off. Last year, 1 Maserati, 1 Aston Martin, 2 Bentleys, 2 Rolls-Royces, 14 Porsches and 22 Teslas were scrapped.
