What gearboxes in passenger cars are popular on the market?

Many drivers, mostly of the older generation, still hold the opinion that there is nothing better and more reliable than "mechanics" when it comes to choosing a gearbox option for a car. Like, they are reliable and durable, they are relatively inexpensive to repair, and the feeling of driving a car is "real", not the same as with these "automatic machines".

I wonder if this opinion (or maybe a stereotype — we will investigate now) has reached our days, and "mechanics" remain among the leaders in our market. To reach a conclusion, we will rely, as usual, on the numbers, this time obtained from a cross-section of offers present on the main electronic bulletin boards where offers for the sale of cars are posted. Letʼs determine the share of manual transmissions and automatic transmissions for each individual year of production, make a diagram, and it will become clear which options of boxes are preferred by motorists in practice.

Shares of different types of gearbox depending on the age of the passenger car, Ukrainian secondary car market

In principle, commenting on the obvious is unnecessary work. That reddish color, which is becoming more and more common as we approach 2024, clearly indicates that the market is dominated by automatic transmissions. That is, the newer the car, the more likely it will be equipped with an automatic transmission.

A few words about the gray sectors marked as "others" and why they are becoming more common as the age of the car decreases: options with alternative or combined transmissions (mostly those with hybrid power plants) and electric cars, which mostly do not have a gearbox as such, are partly included here.

So, in the end, we get an answer to the question of whether the opinion about the "uselessness" of automatic transmissions and the immortality of "mechanics" is a stereotype. Earlier, in the early 90s, when the first, as they were called, "foreign cars" arrived in Ukraine, it was really risky to deal with automatic transmissions — there were no spare parts and specialists who could service such units. Further, the opinion about "machines" was somewhat spoiled by the early versions of "robots", which became famous for their extremely low resource and high repair costs. However, these "diseases" were eliminated over time, and the newer the car, the lower the risk that the automatic transmission will be a problem node that requires significant repair costs. And with the growing popularity of electric cars, the gearbox will go down in history along with internal combustion engines.

In addition, not only in terms of repair and maintenance, "automatics" are much better for safety — the driver does not have to operate the third pedal (clutch) and make decisions about selecting the desired gear, instead he or she can focus all attention on the road environment, rather than lever jerks. After all, it is worth taking another look at the diagram, as everything becomes clear without further words.
