"Euro-6" is already in 3 months. How and for what will the prices on the car market change?

At the time of publication of this article, the import and first registration of most vehicles in Ukraine is allowed provided that they comply with the environmental standard no lower than "Euro-5", and for used cars — "Euro-2". In practice, this establishes the maximum age (or year of production for such vehicles) and, accordingly, has a certain influence on the minimum prices for which such vehicles can be purchased abroad.

We will remind that Euro-5 cars in the EU appeared on the market in 2009, and Euro - 2 cars in 1996. strict requirements) in 2015.

What will change from January 1, 2025?

New and used tractor units for semi-trailers, buses , all trucks , special equipment (evacuators, truck cranes, truck concrete mixers, etc.), as well as new passenger cars that are submitted for the first registration, must meet Euro-6 standards from the beginning of next year .

Cars meeting this environmental standard have appeared on the EU market since 2015. That is, their maximum age is 6 years younger than the cars that are allowed to be imported now. Which, in turn, sets a minimum bar for the prices of vehicles subject to these economic norms.

These changes will not affect electric cars (because they do not have an internal combustion engine), passenger cars with mileage (Euro-2 remains for them), as well as individual vehicles that arrive as humanitarian aid or for defense needs.

What age are imported vehicles now?

Specialists of the car market research institute have determined the average age for the main groups of transport that fall under the regulation of Euro environmental standards. Here is the current average age of imported vehicles:

  • Cargo up to 3.5 tons — 6 years
  • Cargo 3.5+ t — 9.2 years
  • Tractor units — 9.3 years
  • Buses up to 24 pas. seats — 12.6 years
  • Buses 25+ pas. places — 13 years

Since from the first day of next year the age limit will be set for these TK at the level of 10 years (or 9, it will depend on the month of release and the decision of the expert of the certification laboratory), accordingly, the introduction of "Euro-6" will have the greatest impact on used buses, since their the average age crosses the future mark of 10 years, so this segment expects a general price increase (increasing the minimum prices for the most affordable options), but also a certain (albeit relative) renewal at the same time.

To a lesser extent, "Euro-6" will affect trucks and semi-trailer trucks — it can be assumed that the LCV segment will not experience any changes at all, with the current average age of 6 years; an increase in the minimum and average price is expected in the arrays of semi-trailer tractors and trucks with a gross weight of more than 3.5 tons.

At the same time, it is worth mentioning another segment — new passenger cars, which (unlike used cars) will also be subject to the requirement of Euro-6 compliance. In fact, this will not affect most products of well-known manufacturers, since they did not produce Euro-5 cars specifically for certain markets, such as the Ukrainian one, which could potentially be a little cheaper than those with Euro certification -6". After all, in practice, a violation of the rhythm of production with conveyor technologies can even lead to an increase in the cost of cars made "to order".

It will be possible to register a Euro-5 car after January 1, 2025, but for this it must be imported to the customs territory of Ukraine before that date. We will also remind you that compliance with environmental standards is certified by a certificate, later the corresponding "Euro" level is indicated in the vehicle registration certificate.
