Motorcycle market: what did Ukrainians buy in January?

Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of motorcycle registrations in January and identified the most popular models in three segments: import of used, domestic resale and purchase of new motorcycles.

Dynamics of the motorcycle market

The following chart shows the best possible seasonality in the motorcycle trading business. It clearly shows the so-called "high season" associated with the warm season, and "low" when the operation of two-wheeled transport is not too comfortable (or rather, dangerous). However, this does not prevent the existence of a market for motorcycles, which, by comparison, even in the winter months, sell twice as many cars with hybrid power plants on the secondary market at any time of the year.

As always, we would like to remind you that the following numbers are obtained only from the accounting of official sales agreements and first registrations. The "shadow" part of the motorcycle market (in particular, the secondary one) remains outside the scope of this review. According to IDA experts, it can be quite significant — even equal to, or even greater than, the official part.

Now about the numbers: in January, Ukrainians bought 2.4 thousand of all motorcycles. This is almost double ( 49.4%) more than in the same period last year, and also 7.3% more than in December 2023.

Among the total number , 41% of motorcycles were new (imported from abroad), which is 995 units. Usually, in the motor vehicle segment, the majority of deals are sales of new vehicles, but January was an exception — this time "Tuesday" prevailed.

On the domestic market, 1,269 contracts for the purchase and sale of motorcycle equipment were concluded, which accounted for 52.3% of the total number. Probably, bikers are more active in trading motorcycles with mileage in the winter than they are contacting sellers for new two-wheeled machines.

Only 6.7% of motorcycles were imported used from abroad (163 units).

The average age of motorcycles on the market (as of January) was 13.7 years for those resold within the country and 14.3 years for motorcycles submitted for first registration after customs clearance.

The most popular motorcycles in the domestic market

In the domestic market, the Japanese brands Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki prevailed among motorcycle manufacturers in the specified period.

On the domestic market, sales contracts were most often concluded in January for Lifan LF (23 units), Shineray series XY (21 units), and Loncin LX (20 units).

The most popular used motorcycles brought from abroad

In the import segment, there were again not enough manufacturers to make up the classic twenty most popular. After all, it is quite logical — it is the middle of winter after all. In general, imports in the "moto" segment continue to be held by such brands as Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki.

Among individual models, Honda CB (13 pcs.) was most often submitted for the first state registration, and Yamaha N-MAX, Yamaha FZ and Honda CBR in the same number (5 pcs. each).

The most popular new motorcycles

New motorcycles of Chinese manufacturers are mainly bought in Ukraine: in January , Spark, Musstang and Lifan brands became the leaders.

Among the models, Spark SP-series holds the lead (154 units), Musstang MT (123 units) again took second place, Lifan LF (83 units) took third place (also without changes compared to previous periods).
