"Driven" less, the focus shifted to the domestic market. Results of January
Experts of the Car Market Research Institute analyzed the statistics of registration operations in January 2024 and determined the state of affairs on the used car market in Ukraine.
In January, Ukrainians purchased a total of 102,000 used cars. This is 31.7% more than in the same period last year, and 5% more than in December 2023.
Sales agreements on the domestic market prevail: 82.6% of passenger cars with mileage were purchased domestically. In quantitative terms, this is 84.3 thousand. The share of imported cars with mileage from abroad decreased and amounted to 17.4% (17.8 thousand).
Internal resales
In the domestic market, during the first month of the current year, Ukrainians concluded 84,300 contracts. agreements for the sale of used cars. This is 29.9% more than in January 2023, and 13.5% more than in December 2023.
The largest number of registration transactions on the domestic market were recorded in the Kyiv region (18.2 thousand) and the city of Kyiv (10.7 thousand). In third place is the Lviv Region, with a total of 7,200 purchase and sale agreements.
Dnipropetrovsk (4th place, 6.8 thousand) and Odesa (5th place, 5.6 thousand) regions were also included in the Top-5 most active regions in terms of domestic resale of used cars.
January became the first full calendar place during which the service of remote reregistration of cars in the Diya application or the driverʼs electronic cabinet worked. 10,400 sellers of used cars and more than 300 owners of motorcycles have already taken advantage of this opportunity. In general, more than 12% of car owners used this new service from the state. It is worth noting that the list of brands and models, as well as the age picture of cars reissued as a result of the Action, is no different from the general market picture. That is, the age or price of the car does not matter — at least, this is what the statistics show.
The smallest number of agreements was concluded in regions whose territories are partially temporarily occupied or where active hostilities are taking place: in Kherson (277 agreements) and Donetsk (1,010 agreements) regions. Chernihiv (1,924 deals) and Mykolaiv (2,140 deals) oblasts are also among the regions with the lowest number of resales of used cars. Regarding the Luhansk region. — this time there are zeros in the reports.
Import of used cars
In January 2024 , 17,800 used cars imported from abroad were registered for the first time. This figure is significantly higher ( by 41.2%) than in January 2023, but also significantly lower than a month earlier — by 22.5%.
Like last month, used cars from abroad were most actively registered in Lviv region (2.2 thousand first registrations), Kyiv city (1.9 thousand) and Kyiv region (1.4 thousand).
Rivne (1.2 thousand) and Vinnytsia (1.1 thousand) regions were also among the five most active regions in January.
The fewest "freshly driven" cars were registered in the Kherson (26), Donetsk (71), Mykolaiv (211), Kirovohrad (237) and Zaporizhia (269) regions.
It is worth noting that the number of imported cars refers to the number of first registrations carried out by service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Usually, there is a certain amount of time between the delivery of the car, customs clearance, completion of other formalities and the first state registration — from several days to several months.
Recently, another circumstance has been added that may have an impact on the volume of motor vehicle imports — a thorough check of documents at the borders of male drivers who are potentially subject to mobilization. This leads to an increase in the waiting time of carriers in queues, and in some cases to the refusal of individual drivers to pass through the border.
The listed circumstances may lead to a further decrease in the number of first registrations in the following reporting periods, accordingly, the shortage of "freshly driven" cars will grow, as will their market prices, as well as the cost of " turnkey car driving " services.
