What truck tractors do Ukrainian carriers choose? Results of December

Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in Ukraine during December and identified the top models in three segments of truck tractors: import of used vehicles, domestic resale and purchase of new ones.

Dynamics of the truck tractor market

In December 2023, Ukrainians purchased 2,100 new and used truck tractors. This is 39.8% less than in the same period of 2022, and 14.6% less than in November 2023.

The share of domestic sales was 54.9%, the import of used truck tractors was 38.8%.The total share of "trucks" with mileage was 93.7%.

6.2% of truck tractors were purchased new, which in quantitative terms equals 129 units.

The diagram shows how during 2023 the demand for truck tractors gradually decreased. December set an anti-record — the lowest trading volume in this segment since the beginning of the year. One of the factors that explains this is the satisfaction of transportersʼ needs in vehicles, which were in short supply even a year ago, because after the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, the main transport for the export-import of goods became the automobile. However, we should probably continue to expect a decrease in the demand for both tractor-trailers and semi-trailers for them, since we have a second negative factor that has not yet been eliminated: the business of Ukrainian carriers suffers significantly from the blocking of borders with several countries by so-called "activists" thousands of our "trucks" stand in queues. So some of them are obviously not ready to expand their fleet with inexpensive cars adapted for international transportation just now.

The most popular tractors on the domestic market

DAF XF confidently remains the most popular tractor unit on the domestic market in Ukraine. Agreements for the purchase and sale of such models were concluded in 333 units. MAN TGX is in second place (125 units), Volvo FH is third (122 units). In addition to these models, Reault Magnum and Premium are also among the top five tractors with the highest demand (111 and 95 units, respectively).

The most popular used tractors imported from abroad

In December, MAN TGX (227 units) took first place among the "driven" tractors, which displaced DAF XF (225 units), the leader of the previous month, to the second position.

The Volvo FH (130 units) will continue to occupy the third place, and the Scania R-Series (68 units) will take the fourth place. Rounding out the top five are Mercedes-Benz Actros (42 units).

Among the new models, Ukrainian carriers most often bought MAN TGX (56 units). Volvo FH is in second place (28 units), and Scania S-series is in third place (11 units).

In fourth place is DAF XF (9 pcs.), in fifth place — Scania R-Series (7 pcs.).
