December results: the new car market "shrunk" by 5%, but legal entity buyers became more active
Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in December 2023, described the market dynamics and identified the 20 most popular new cars of the month.
Dynamics of the new car market
In December, Ukrainians purchased 5,500 new cars. This is slightly less, by 5.2%, than in November 2023, and by 31.7% more than in December 2022.
In total, from the beginning of the year to the end of 2023, Ukrainians registered almost 63,000 new cars for the first time.
Most new cars in December ( 87.4%, 4,828 units) were imported from abroad. The share of passenger cars manufactured in Ukraine by the method of large-unit assembly or converted from imported machine sets increased again and amounted to 12.6% (699 units).
Buyers of new cars were mainly individuals (56.8%, 3,142 units), legal entities purchased 2,385 cars (43.2%). It is worth noting that in general, in 2023, the share of corporate buyers was 33.5%, that is, legal entities bought new cars much more actively in December. What is ultimately observed every year — many enterprises have residual funds that need to be used by the end of the year, or accountants need goods with VAT for the annual balance sheet, which are often represented by new passenger cars.
During the past month, the most new cars were registered in the city of Kyiv (2,224 units, 40.2%) and Kyiv region (577 units, 10.4%) — which traditionally accounts for more than half of the total volume (50.6%) market of new passenger cars. Dnipropetrovsk (407 units, 7.4%), Odesa (326 units, 5.9%), and Lviv (294 units, 5.3%) regions are also among the leaders.
The fewest new cars were registered in Luhansk (3 units), Donetsk (10 units), Kherson (11 units), Rivne (53 units) and Chernihiv (54 units) regions.
The most popular new cars
Most often, in December, as in previous months, buyers of new cars chose Toyota (802 units, 14.5%). The second place belongs to Volkswagen (480 units, 8.7%).
In third place, with a small margin, is Skoda (469 units, 8.5%), followed by Renault (444 units, 8%). Rounding out the top five is the local Special-Com-Service (SKS), a manufacturer of various body equipment, utility equipment, lifting equipment, equipment for power structures, medical transport based on the chassis (or ready-made cars) of other manufacturers. Its result is fifth place with 276 cars (mostly special purpose) and a share of 5%.
The first position in the rating of new cars this time went to Renault Duster (354 units), in the usual version for the general market. The model of the same name will once again be among the most popular new passenger cars in December, on the 4th position, but already as a special vehicle for the needs of the police.
Second place, as last month, is occupied by Toyota RAV-4 (233 units). Volkswagen ID.4 (227 units) is on the third place, and Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (156 units) is in fifth place, still in the current version, which should be replaced by a new one this year.
