Trucks over 3.5 tons: what was the demand for in November?

Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in Ukraine in November and identified the top models in three segments of trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons (except semi-trailer trucks): import of used cars, domestic resale and purchase of new cars, including those converted in Ukraine .

Truck market dynamics

In November, the 3.5+ t class truck market began to grow: Ukrainians purchased almost 2.7 thousand trucks with a gross weight of more than 3.5 tons (excluding tractors). This is 61.7% more than in the same period last year, and 8.4% more than in October 2023. After the August sales peak, the demand for trucks has been declining, but this time we see an upward trend in this segment.

The majority of trucks were purchased on the domestic market: 79.2% (2.1 thousand units). 11.7% of used trucks (310 units) were brought from abroad.

Last month, 83 imported and 159 converted trucks were purchased in Ukraine (a total of 242 trucks, 9.1% ).

The most popular trucks in the domestic market

Dump trucks (595 units), vans (386 units), flatbed trucks (267 units), isothermal vans (100 units) and platforms (99 units) remain the most popular in the domestic market.

For many months in a row, trucks based on Mercedes-Benz T1/T2 remain the leader of domestic resales. In November, an agreement was reached regarding these154 purchase and sale agreements. Despite the fact that these models were discontinued more than 20 years ago, Ukrainians actively buy them, primarily due to the difficult economic situation and the inability to purchase a newer car. The platform of these models is used for various superstructures, additional attachments are installed and converted for special needs, despite their considerable age.

KamAZ-5320 (86 pcs.) was in second place this time , probably due to the seasonal increase in the activity of agricultural works. In third place is Mercedes-Benz Atego (85 units), and in fourth place is another product of the same manufacturer — Sprinter (80 units). The fifth among trucks is ZIL-131 (70 units), the demand for which could increase due to the same reasons as for the "classic" KaMAZ — agricultural work and the need to take the harvest from the fields.

Again, 9 of the 20 most popular trucks were models of the Russian-Soviet automobile industry. At the same time, the average age of trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons sold on the domestic market in November 2023 was 21.2 years, 1 year more than last month. However, since the volume of trades in this segment is relatively insignificant, it is impossible to fix the trends of "aging" or "rejuvenation" of the truck fleet. In addition, due to the low purchasing power, it is difficult for transporters or entrepreneurs to purchase a new car, and it is difficult to bring a used one from abroad due to legal restrictions: there is a limitation of the ecological standard not lower than "Euro-5", and the excise tax grid is created in such a way that it is economically expedient to import only trucks up to 5 years old.

The most popular used trucks are imported from abroad

Vans with hydroboards (88 units), vans (39 units) and container carriers (37 units) were most often brought from abroad in November. Also popular were bot awnings (28 pcs.) and refrigerated vans with hydroboards (20 pcs.).

Among individual models of trucks with a gross weight of over 3.5 tons, the largest addition to the Ukrainian fleet was the Iveco Daily (52 units), followed by the MAN TGL (45 units), followed by the Mercedes-Benz Atego (40 units) on the third step. ).

The "heavy" Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (35 pcs.) and Renault Master (21 pcs.) with MAN TGS, which were submitted for the first registration in the same number, also made it to the top five most popular imported trucks.

The most popular new trucks

Among new imported trucks, 36 vans, 10 refrigerated vans, the same number of dump trucks, as well as 8 garbage trucks and 7 mobile cranes were registered for the first time in November.

The most popular new truck was the Reform 0405032G collection van (based on the Ford Transit), manufactured by a Ukrainian enterprise: 22 units were registered. Second place in Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (15 units), and the same result in Intercargo Truck F03322 (Cherkasi van manufacturing enterprise).
