Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of registration operations in October 2023 and determined the state of affairs with sales of used cars in Ukraine.
In October, Ukrainians purchased a total of 104,000 used cars. This is 18.5% more than in the same period of last year 2022, and 4.2% less than in September 2023.
Traditionally, purchase and sale agreements prevail in the domestic market: 79.1% of passenger cars with mileage were purchased domestically. In quantitative terms, this is 82.2 thousand. The share of imported cars with mileage from abroad amounted to 20.9% (21.8 thousand). And currently this is the maximum value for newly arrived passenger cars for the past 14 months.
Internal resales
In the domestic market during the 10th month of the current year, Ukrainians concluded 82.2 thousand agreements for the sale of used cars. This is 18.5% more than in October 2022, and 5.6% less than in September 2023.
The largest number of registration transactions on the domestic market was recorded in the city of Kyiv: 12.4 thousand. Dnipropetrovsk region increased its volumes, which allowed it to take second place with the result of 9.4 thousand transactions. Kyiv region moved one step lower, with 9.1 thousand resales.
Lviv (4th place, 8.1 thousand) and Odesa (5th place, 7.6 thousand) regions were also included in the Top-5 most active regions in terms of domestic resale of used cars.
The smallest number of agreements was concluded in regions whose territories are temporarily occupied or where active hostilities are taking place: Kherson (341 agreements), Luhansk (688 agreements) and Donetsk (1,107 agreements) regions. Chernihiv (2,000 deals) and Volyn (2,300 deals) oblasts are also among the regions with the lowest number of used car sales.
Import of used cars
In October 2023 , 21.8 thousand used cars were brought from abroad. This indicator is 32.7% higher than in October 2022, and similar, but still higher than a month earlier — by 1.4% more.
Like last month, used cars from abroad were most actively registered in Lviv region (2.9 thousand first registrations), Kyiv (2.2 thousand) and Kyiv region (1.7 thousand).
Vinnytsia (1.5 thousand) and Rivne (1.3 thousand) regions also entered the top five most active regions in September.
