Trucks over 3.5 tons: demand decreased slightly in September. What models did you buy?

Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in Ukraine in September and identified the top models in three segments of trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons (except tractor-trailers): used import, domestic resale and purchase of new cars, including those converted in Ukraine .

Truck market dynamics

In September, Ukrainians purchased 2,600 trucks with a gross weight of more than 3.5 tons (excluding tractors). This is 36.8% more than in the same period last year, and 13.3% less than in August 2023. That is, after the August sales peak, interest in trucks in the first month of autumn decreased somewhat.

Most of the trucks were purchased on the domestic market: 83.4% (2.2 thousand units). Used 8.4% of trucks (218 units) were brought from abroad.

As usual, few new trucks were purchased in September: 46 imported and 168 converted in Ukraine (214 in total, 8.3% ).

The most popular trucks in the domestic market

In September, dump trucks (666 units), vans (424 units), flatbed trucks (230 units), refrigerator vans (102 units) and isothermal vans (93 units) remained the most popular in the domestic market.

For many months in a row, trucks based on Mercedes-Benz T1/T2 remain the leader of domestic resales. In July, an agreement was reached regarding these155 purchase and sale agreements. Despite the fact that these models were discontinued more than 20 years ago, Ukrainians actively buy them, primarily due to the difficult economic situation and the inability to purchase a newer car. The platform of these models is used for various superstructures, additional attachment equipment is installed and converted for special needs, despite their respectable age.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter rose to second place (96 deals), which is also used as a platform for various add-ons. The third step is still occupied by the Soviet-Russian KamAZ 5511 (87 units).

Fourth place was taken by MAN L2000 (74 deals), and another KamAZ — 5320 (74 deals) rounds out the top 5 most popular trucks in July.

It is noteworthy that 9 of the 20 most popular trucks were models of the Russian-Soviet automobile industry. At the same time, the average age of trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons sold on the domestic market in September 2023 was 24.5 years — 0.7 years less than last month, and as much as 1.1 years more than in September -2022. Due to the low purchasing power, it is difficult to buy a new car, and it is difficult to bring a used one from abroad due to legal restrictions: the restriction of the ecological standard is not lower than "Euro-5", and it is profitable to bring only cars under 5 years old.

The most popular used trucks brought from abroad

Vans with hydroboards (49 pcs.), container carriers (48 pcs.) and vans (26 pcs.) were most often brought from abroad in July. Refrigerated vans with hydroboards (13 units) and concrete mixers (13 units) were also popular.

In September, MAN TGL (37 units) rose to the first place in terms of popularity of used trucks, and Mercedes-Benz Atego (33 units) took second place. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (22 units) moved up to third place, although for a long time it held the leading position in the segment of imported trucks with mileage.

MAN TGX (22 units) and Iveco Daily (22 units) also made it to the top five most popular imported trucks in September.

The average age of imported used trucks over 3.5 tons first registered in September 2023 was 8.3 years, down 0.6 years from a month ago and 2.2 years down from September 2022.

The most popular new trucks

Among the new imported trucks, new dump trucks (19 units), vans (11 units) and mobile cranes (4 units) were registered for the first time in July. Also, 3 new garbage trucks and 3 container trucks received license plates for the first time.

The most popular new truck in September was the Reform 0405032G collection van (based on the Ford Transit), manufactured by a Ukrainian enterprise: 45 units were registered. The second place was taken by Scania P-Series (8 units), and the third place was the SBM MDKZ 26-28 dump truck (based on the JAC N200), also manufactured in Ukraine.
