The increase in fuel prices stimulates the purchase of electric cars and the installation of HBO. June results
Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research determined how the shares of cars from the point of view of fuel among domestic resales, imports of used cars and sales of new cars changed in June, as well as the dynamics of installation of gas cylinder equipment. It turned out that Ukrainians reacted to the increase in fuel prices by setting two records at once: the maximum share of electric cars in the sales structure and the maximum number of conversions of cars to run on liquefied gas (installation of LPG).
General dynamics of passenger car sales by fuel type
During June 2023, Ukrainians most often chose gasoline vehicles. 39.1% (47.1 thousand) of the total number of purchase and sale agreements of new and used vehicles — cars, trucks of all categories and buses — were purchased. If we add to them cars with installed HBO ( 17.6%, 21.2 thousand) and cars with hybrid engines ( 2.1%, 2.6 thousand), then gasoline cars will make up the absolute majority: 58.8% from the total number of sales.
The share of diesel cars was 37% (44.6 thousand). There were 0.3% of the total number (412 units) of machines equipped with an engine for working exclusively on gas fuel.
The share of electric cars was 3.8% (4.6 thousand) of the total number.
If compared with the previous month (May-2023), the share of diesel cars increased slightly (from 36.4% to 37%). The share of electric cars increased from 3.3% to 3.8%. This indicator turned out to be twice as high as in June 2022, and in general the maximum on the Ukrainian car market.
Instead, the share of all other engine types decreased: gasoline engines — from 39.9% to 39.1%; hybrid ones — from 2.2% to 2.1%; cars with HBO (from 17.9% to 17.6%); " gas " — from 0.4% to 0.3%.
Internal resales
Gasoline cars dominated the domestic market in June — 39.7% (36.9 thousand) of such deals were concluded; there were 21.9% of vehicles with a gas installation (20.4 thousand transactions). Diesel cars were in the minority: 35.4% (32.9 thousand deals).
Among all cars on the domestic market, 1.5% were electric (1.4 thousand), 1.2% were hybrid (1.1 thousand), and 0.4% were exclusively gas-powered (360 units).
In June, if we compare the indicators with the previous month, the share of diesel cars became slightly larger (35.4% instead of 34.7%), gasoline and hybrid cars — slightly smaller (39.7% instead of 40.2% and 1.3% instead of 1.2% respectively). Shares of electric cars (1.5%), cars with LPG (21.9%) and gas engines (0.4%)remained unchanged.
Import of used
Used vehicles with a diesel engine were most imported from abroad in June ( 44%, 9.2 thousand). The share of gasoline cars was 37.1% (7.7 thousand). However, if we add to this indicator the shares of cars with HBO ( 4.1%, 862 units) and hybrid vehicles( 2.1%, 432 units), which are actually gasoline, their total share will be 43.3%.
Almost no used gas vehicles are imported from abroad — only 0.2% (52 units) were used.
Electric cars with mileagelast month they were brought in 12.5% of cases (2.6 thousand). This is an absolute record for this market segment.
Compared to May-2023, the share of diesel cars decreased in June (from 45.5% to 44%). Also, the share of gasoline cars and cars with HBO decreased slightly — from 37.8% to 37.1% and 4.2% to 4.1%, respectively. The share of hybrids increased (from 2% to 2.1%) and electric cars — from 10.3% to 12.5%. The share of gas cars did not change (0.2%).
New ones
New vehicles with diesel engines became the most popular in June. Among all new cars registered for the first time, there were 37.8% of such cars (2.5 thousand units).
There were 37.2% (2.5 thousand) gasoline vehicles, 15.5% (1 thousand) hybrid vehicles, and 0.4% (26 units) with a factory-built HBO. Together, their share was 53.1%.
The share of electric cars was 9.1% (602 units).
Compared to May 2023, the number of gasoline cars decreased from 40.9% to 37.2%. The share of diesel cars increased from 34.8% to 37.8%, hybrid cars — from 14.9% to 15.5%, which turned out to be the maximum indicator in this market segment. The share of vehicles with HBO decreased slightly (from 0.7% to 0.4%).
The share of electric cars increased from 8.7% to 9.1%.
Dynamics of installation of HBO
During June, Ukrainians registered conversion of 5,800 cars to work on gas cylinder equipment. This is 5.5% more than in May 2023 and 87.1% more than in June 2022. The activity of converting cars to run on gas has increased significantly : such a monthly indicator was last recorded in July 2021. This may be a reaction to the increase in fuel prices.
