Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of registration operations in March 2023 and determined what is happening with the sales of used cars. In the first month of spring, sales of used cars in Ukraine increased significantly. Mainly due to an increase in the number of internal resales.
In March, Ukrainians bought 96,300 used cars. This is 982% more than in the same period of last year 2022 and 24.3% more than in February 2023.
At the same time, the share of domestic resales continues to remain consistently high: 83.6% of the total number of used car sales transactions.
The share of imported cars with mileage from abroad amounted to 16.4% of the total number of purchased used cars. For comparison, at the peak of the so-called "zero" customs clearance, in May 2022, "freshly driven" cars with mileage made up more than 64%.
Internal resales
On the domestic market in March, Ukrainians concluded 80,500 sales and purchase agreements for used cars. Since the Service Centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs were temporarily not working, the indicator turned out to be 26,733.3% higher than in March 2022. If compared with the previous month, February 2023, sales were 25% higher.
The largest number of registration transactions on the domestic market was recorded in the city of Kyiv : 12.4 thousand. Together with the Kyiv region, which took third place in the rating with 8.2 thousand registrations, they make up 20.6% of the total number of used cars sold domestically during March.
Dnipropetrovsk (2nd place, 9.2 thousand), Lviv (4th place, 7.3 thousand) and Odesa (5th place, 6.9 thousand) regions are also traditionally included in the top 5 most active regions in terms of domestic resale of used cars. Such a rating can be observed for several months in a row.
The smallest number of agreements was concluded in the regions whose territories are temporarily occupied or where active hostilities are taking place: Kherson (232 agreements), Luhansk (486 agreements) and Donetsk (937 agreements) regions. Also, Chernihivska (1.9 thousand deals) was included in the top 5 regions with the smallest number of used car salesand Mykolaivsk (2 thousand transactions) region.
Import of used cars
In March 2023, 15,800 used cars were brought from abroad. This indicator is 83.7% more than in March 2022 and 20.6% more than in February 2022.
Traditionally, used cars from abroad were most actively registered in Lviv Oblast (2,000 units), Kyiv (1,400 units) and Vinnytsia (1,300 units) oblasts. Compared to the previous month, the latter rose in the rating by two places.
Rivne (1.1 thousand) and Kyiv (1 thousand) regions were also among the most active regions in March. At the same time , Kyiv together with Kyiv Oblast make up the majority of the market: 15.1%.
Kherson (22), Donetsk (55), Luhansk (86), Mykolayiv (183) and Zaporizhia (191) regions registered the fewest "freshly driven" cars.
