Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of registrations of "electric cars" in Ukraine during January and identified the top 15 models in three segments: import of used cars, domestic resale and purchase of new electric cars.
Dynamics of the electric car market
In January, Ukrainians bought 2,000 new and used electric cars. This is 83.3% more than in January last year and -4.3% less than in December 2022. Thus, despite Russiaʼs terrorist attacks on the Ukrainian electrical infrastructure, the electric car market has grown significantly over the past year. The January sales decline is most likely related to the annual seasonal decline in activity on the auto market.
The majority of electric cars in January (52%, 1,063 units) were brought used from abroad. It is the import of cars with mileage that is the main source of filling the fleet of vehicles with an electric engine. Used "electric cars" are bought, first of all, because of their lower price compared to new ones, because the purchasing power of Ukrainians remains at a low level. In addition, the import of such cars is stimulated by their "zero" customs clearance — there is no need to pay customs duty, VAT and a pension fund fee.
Accordingly, 32.7% of the total number of sold cars with an electric motor (669 units) were purchased on the domestic market.
15.3% of cars (312 units) were bought new, and this is the largest share of sales of new electric cars over the past 12 months. It has been growing for the fifth month in a row.
Passenger cars made up the absolute majority of vehicles with an electric motor in January: 98.2%. The remaining 1.8% (36 units) were cargo.
In general, as of the end of January 2023, the total fleet of automobiles with an electric engine is 47,982 cars registered in Ukraine (taking into account those removed from the register due to scrapping and export abroad): 46,145 passenger cars (96.2%). 1,833 trucks (3.8%) and 4 buses.
