Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in the first month of 2023, described the market dynamics and identified the 15 most popular new passenger cars in January.
Dynamics of the new car market
In January, Ukrainians bought almost 3,500 new passenger cars. This is -35.2% less than in January 2022 and -12.5% less than in December. Considering that January in Ukraine is traditionally not very active in car sales, and the war is going on in the country, such a monthly indicator can be considered not bad.
The majority of new cars in November ( 85.8%, 2,980 units) were imported from abroad. The share of passenger cars manufactured in Ukraine by the method of large-unit assembly was 14.2% (495 units).
The largest number of new cars in November were traditionally registered in Kyiv (1,111 units) and Kyiv region (457 units), as well as Dnipropetrovsk (334 units), Lviv (251 units) and Odesa (189 units) regions.
The fewest new cars were registered for the first time in Luhansk (4 units) , Donetsk (5 units) , Kherson (11 units), Chernihiv (23 units)and Mykolaiv (35 units) regions.
The most popular new imported cars
Most often, when buying a new car in January, Ukrainians chose the Toyota brand (535 units, 15.4%). The second place was taken by the Renault brand (274 units, 7.9%).
Skoda rose to third place (252 units, 7.3%), and Mercedes-Benz took fourth place (251 units, 7.2%), which dropped one position.
Rounding out the top 5 is the Volkswagen brand (236 units, 6.5%).
Among the models in the first month of 2023, Renault Duster became the best-selling model (187 units), moving up one step. The second was Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (+1 position, 157 units).
The third step was taken by Suzuki Vitara (+1 position, 153 units). Volkswagen ID.4 (132 units) took fourth place.
Closes the first five KIA Sportage (126 units).
In general, Ukrainians continue to prefer practical universal cars: of the 15 most popular models in January, 13 are SUVs and crossovers.

Among the new passenger cars assembled in Ukraine, Skoda cars were the most purchased in October (125 units in total): Kodiaq (77 units), Karoq (45 units), Octavia (2 units) and SuperB (1 unit).
