$22 billion: the value of cars sold in 2022

The absolute majority of cars on the market today are sold online. The Automoto.ua aggregator collects ads for the sale of all cars from 100 auto sites in Ukraine. Based on these data, the experts of the Institute of Car Market Research investigated the activity of sellers, determined the financial volume of the car market in the past 2022, and also described the situation in the regions and compiled a rating of brands by the total value of cars on sale.

Dynamics of the online car market

During 2022, Ukrainians published more than 2.6 million ads for the sale of used cars on the Internet. In total, these cars were worth $22.19 billion — and this indicator can be considered the financial volume of the secondary car market in Ukraine last year.

Both the number and the total value of passenger cars in the ads were the largest in May : at that time, the Ukrainian car market was at its peak due to the so-called "zero" customs clearance. During this month, sellers published more than 277,000 ads, and these cars cost $2.5 billion.

After the return of import taxes, the activity of car sales on the Internet decreased somewhat. The worst month in this regard, if we do not take into account the stressful March, turned out to be November: then only 192,400 sales ads with a total value of $1.5 billion were published.

In general, the dynamics of the online car market by the number of ads synchronously repeats the financial indicators: the greater the number of ads, the greater the total value of the cars in the ads.

In which regions were the most cars sold online?

The largest number of advertisements in 2022 were placed in Kyiv region and Kyiv (438.9 thousand). Thus, even during the war, the automobile market of the capital and the Kyiv region amounted to $5.3 billion — thatʼs how much these passenger cars cost in total.

The Lviv region took second place: 238,100 ads and a total value of $2.1 billion. Dnipropetrovsk region took third place (203,000 ads and a total value of 1.7 billion).

The fourth place was taken by Odesa : there, during 2022, Ukrainians posted 175,600 ads for the sale of cars with mileage on the Internet, which were worth a total of $1.7 billion.

Ivano-Frankivsk region closes the top five with 128,000 ads and the total value of these cars is $1 billion.

The fewest sales offers were recorded in Luhansk (18,500 with a total value of $144.8 million), Kherson (18,500 with a total value of $123.2 million), Kirovohrad (46,400, $303.7 million), Donetsk (48.5 thousand, $295.2 million) and Mykolaiv (49.1 thousand, $288.3 million) regions. That is, the situation was the least active in the regions affected by the war or on the territory of which active hostilities are taking place.

Which car brands are the most expensive, and which are the most expensive

In 2022, the Volkswagen brand had the largest total value : $2.6 billion. BMW took second place ( $1.8 billion ), and Mercedes-Benz came in third ( $1.8 billion ).

The top five also included Toyota ( $1.5 billion ) and Audi ( $1.4 billion ).

Thus, as a result of the largest number of advertisements, Volkswagen surpassed more expensive premium brands in terms of the total value of cars on sale. However, the second most advertised brand on the Internet last year — the Russian-Soviet VAZ — was not included in the ranking of cars with the highest total value. Although Ukrainians placed almost 270,000 ads during the year, due to their low cost (an average of $1,300), their total cost was only $495 million.

The Renault brand (151.4 thousand) is in third place for the number of ads, Opel is in fourth place (134 thousand), and Ford (138.6 thousand) closes the top five.

The most expensive brand in 2022 was Rolls-Royce (average price $410,000). The second place was taken by Lamborghini ($352,000 on average), and the third by Aston Martin ($194,000 on average).

McLaren (average price $160,000) and Rivian (average cost $160,000) were also included in the top 5 most expensive brands in Ukraine sold on the Internet in 2022.
