In 2022, Ukrainians purchased 39,100 units. cars with mileage. This is 63.7% less than during 2021, but despite the war, sales are gradually recovering. Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research determined in which regions and which new cars were bought the most in the past year.

Sales dynamics of new passenger cars

In December 2022, Ukrainians purchased 4,000 new cars. This is −0.7% less than in November and −63.1% less than in December 2021. In total, since the beginning of the year, Ukrainians have purchased 39,089 new cars. Most of them ( 89.3%, 34.9 thousand) were imported from abroad, another 10.7% (4.2 thousand) are cars assembled in Ukraine using the large-unit method or converted by Ukrainian enterprises.

Dynamics of sales of new passenger cars during 2022

With the beginning of a full-scale war, sales of new cars almost stopped. So, in March, only about 600 new cars were registered for the first time. Since April, sales began to gradually increase, and on average, by November, about 3,200 new passenger cars were sold every month. Decemberʼs indicator (more than 4 thousand cars) turned out to be the most successful since February 24, while the share of cars manufactured or converted in Ukraine in general turned out to be the highest even for "pre-war" indicators: 20.9% (842 cars).

In which regions are most people buying new cars

In 2022, the largest number of new cars were registered in the city of Kyiv (11.5 thousand), which is 29.5% of the total number. Another 5.3 thousand passenger cars received license plates for the first time in the Kyiv region ( 13.7% ). Thus, Kyiv and the region together occupied 43.2% of the market of new passenger cars in 2022.

Dnipropetrovsk Oblast was in third place (3.4 thousand, 8.7%), Lviv Oblast was fourth (2.6 thousand, 6.6%), which rose 2 places compared to the 2021 rating. Odesa region rounds out the top five (2.2 thousand, 5.7%).

The fewest new cars were registered in Luhansk (99 units), Kherson (228 units, minus 9 positions in the rating) and Donetsk (286 units, minus 14 positions in the rating) regions.

If we compare quantitatively, then in 2022, sales of new cars fell in all regions without exception. Compared to 2021, the number of new car sales decreased the most (by 89.3%) in the Donetsk region. Sales of used cars in the Kherson region decreased by 86.5%; by 83.8% — in Luhansk ; by 83.8% — in Kharkiv ; by 77.5% — in Zaporizhzhia ; by 76.2% — in Mykolayivska. These are the regions most affected by the war. However, the fact that even under such conditions Ukrainians buy and register new cars there is already a great achievement, according to the Institute of Car Market Research.

Sales of new passenger cars changed the least in Chernivtsi (-36.8%), Zakarpattia (-38.5%) and Lviv (-39.6%) regions.

The most popular brands of new cars

The first brand among new cars in 2022, as in 2021, was Toyota. During the year, 6,500 cars of this brand were registered, which is 16.6% of the total number.

The second place was taken by the French brand Renault with a share of 9.9% and 3.8 thousand registered passenger cars. Skoda is on the third step ( 6.9%, 2.7 thousand). Passenger cars of this brand are imported from abroad, and are also assembled using the large-unit method in Ukraine, at the Evrocar plant in the Zakarpattia region.

The fourth place was taken by the German Volkswagen. Ukrainians chose cars of this brand in 6.3% of cases (2.5 thousand).

Rounding out the top five is Hyundai ( 6.2%, 2.4 thousand).

The most popular brands among new cars, 2022

Among Ukrainian enterprises, in addition to Skoda, SKS was also included in the list of the 25 most popular brands. The company manufactures specialized vehicles from imported machine sets and chassis. During 2022, more than a thousand such cars were registered (2.6%).

Unfortunately, during the year, 403 cars of the Russian brand Lada were registered, which were assembled at the Zaporozhye Automobile Plant before the start of the full-scale war. However, this is five times less than during 2021. Most likely, these were sales of warehouse remnants, and we will not see these cars again in future ratings.

The most popular models of new cars

Toyota RAV-4 took first place among domestic sales in 2022. 2.5 thousand of them were purchased in 12 months.

The second place was taken by Renault Duster (2 thousand), and the third place by Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (1.2 thousand).

Skoda Kodiaq (1.2 thousand units) was on the fourth step, and Hyundai Tucson (838 units) rounded out the top 5.

The main trend that should be highlighted: when choosing a new car, Ukrainians prefer SUVs and crossovers. Among the 10 most popular models in 2022, nine are cars with this body type. They are chosen for their practicality and versatility.
