Domestic sales of used cars decreased in 2022, but the market is alive. Results and top models
In 2022, Ukrainians bought on the domestic market 711.7 thousand pcs. cars with mileage. This is 24.7% less than during 2021, however, given the circumstances, such indicators can be considered successful: the market is alive, no matter what. Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research determined in which regions and which cars were bought the most in the past year.
Dynamics of domestic sales of used cars
In December 2022, Ukrainians purchased 69,400 cars with mileage within the country. This is −0.4% less than in November and −30.9% less than in December 2021. In total, since the beginning of the year, Ukrainians have concluded 711,744 agreements for the purchase and sale of used cars on the domestic market. During 2021, which turned out to be the most successful in the history of the Ukrainian car market, Ukrainians concluded 24.7% more purchase and sale agreements. However, the drop in trade volumes by only a quarter in the conditions of the war cannot be considered a bad result, according to the Institute of Car Market Research.
It is noticeable that the domestic car market "sedated" after the start of a full-scale war, began to recover in April, became more active due to the introduction of the so-called "zero" customs clearance, reached its peak in September (79 thousand sales transactions), and stabilized at about 70 thousand. Such results are shown by sales of used cars within the country for the third month in a row.
In which regions are the most used cars bought?
As last year, in 2022, the most used passenger cars on the domestic market were purchased in the city of Kyiv : 93,800 sales and purchase agreements were concluded in 12 months. Dnipropetrovsk Oblast was in second place (63.3 thousand deals), and Kyiv Oblast was third (63.3 thousand deals). Traditionally, the capital and the region have the largest share of the Ukrainian car market: more than 22%.
If compared with 2021, the first 4 positions in the list of regions where Ukrainians concluded the most purchase and sale agreements have not changed. However, further on in the list, the regions affected by the war immediately stand out: Donetsk region fell by 14 positions, Zaporizhzhia by 6, Kherson by 3, and Kharkiv and Mykolaiv regions by 2. Instead, Kirovohrad and Rivne regions rose in the rating (+4 positions); Khmelnytskyi, Zakarpattia, Chernivtsi, Sumy, Chernihiv and Sumy regions rose to three positions; Poltava and Vinnytsia regions added two points each, and Ivano-Frankivsk, Cherkasy and Lviv regions rose by 1 step. Ukrainians concluded 90,200 purchase and sale agreements for cars of this brand, which is 12.7% of the total number. Compared to the previous year, 2021, the share of the German mark increased slightly (from 10.8%). Instead, Russian-Soviet VAZ cars, which still occupy the second place in the rating, were bought less: 48.9 thousand deals, which is 6.9% of the total number. In 2021, more of these cars were bought: 95.1 thousand or 10.1 of the total number. In general, such processes testify to the gradual rejection of Ukrainians from the products of the Russian-Soviet automobile industry and their gradual replacement by cars of Western brands.

Most of the popular models on the market are products of European car factories. The impact of the so-called "zero" customs clearance, which lasted during April-June 2022, is also noticeable: the number of purchase and sale agreements for models that were imported en masse during the period of this law increased significantly. Yes, Audi A4, if compared with the rating of 2021, rose in the rating by as many as 21 positions, Opel Zafira — by 19, BMW X5 — by 16, Renault Scenic — by 15 steps.
