Sales of used cars are stabilizing. Results of November

Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of registration operations in November 2022 and determined what is happening with the sales of used cars. It turned out that the market is gradually stabilizing.

In November, Ukrainians purchased 84,800 used cars. This is −42.2% less than in the same period of last year 2021 and almost the same (−0.1% less) than in October 2022.

Dynamics of used car imports and domestic resales, November 2021 — November 2022

At the same time, the share of domestic resales remains consistently high: 81.5% as of November. Imports of cars with mileage from abroad accounted for only 18.5% of the total number of purchased used cars. For comparison, in November 2021, these indicators were recorded at the level of 58.9% and 41.1%, respectively.

Thus, it can be stated that the Ukrainian car market in the segment of used car sales has stabilized. And this is despite Russiaʼs terrorist attacks on energy infrastructure and power outages. In general, the activity on the secondary market decreased by approximately 40%, if compared with last yearʼs figures.

In total, since the beginning of 2022, Ukrainians have purchased 642,300 cars on the domestic market, and another 388,000 used cars were brought from abroad (the majority, more than 200,000, during the period of "zero" customs clearance).

Internal resales

In November, 69,100 used cars received new owners on the domestic market. This indicator turned out to be −0.4% lower than in October, and −20% lower than in November 2022.

Agreements concluded for the sale of used cars on the domestic car market by region, November 2022

The largest number of registration transactions on the domestic market was recorded in the city of Kyiv: 8.1 thousand. Together with the Kyiv region, which took third place in the rating with 6.3 thousand registrations, they make up 20.9% of the total number of used cars sold in November.

Dnipropetrovsk (6.9 thousand), Odesa (5.5 thousand) and Lviv (5.1 thousand) oblasts are also among the top 5 most active regions in terms of domestic resale of used cars. Such a rating is already common for the Ukrainian car market during the war, so it can be stated that sales in the regions have also stabilized.

The smallest number of agreements was concluded in the regions whose territories are temporarily occupied or where active hostilities are taking place: Luhansk (325 agreements), Kherson (325 agreements), Donetsk (667 agreements) and Mykolaiv (1.4 thousand agreements) regions. Traditionally, the Volyn region has entered the top 5 regions with the fewest sales of used cars (only 1.3 thousand transactions). Most of the cars on the local market are "freshly driven" cars from abroad.

Import of used cars

During November, 15,700 used cars imported from abroad were registered in Ukraine. This is -74% less than in November 2021 and 2.5% more than in October 2022. Therefore, imports also stabilized, and after the cancellation of the so-called "zero" customs clearance, the market of used cars from abroad can be estimated at an average of 15 thousand used cars every month.

Donetsk (50), Luhansk (99), Kherson (137), Mykolaiv (168) and Kirovohrad (260) regions registered the fewest "freshly driven" cars.
