Experts of the Auto Market Research Institute analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in Ukraine and identified the top models in three segments of buses: import of used, domestic resale and purchase of new ones.
Bus market dynamics
In September 2022, Ukrainians purchased 557new and used buses. This indicator is -45.3% less than in the same period last year and -6.9 % less than in August 2022.
Most of the buses were bought on the domestic market in September: 480 buses, which accounted for 86.2% of the total number. This share turned out to be the largest in the last 12 months.
Instead, they brought only 10.2% of used buses from abroad : 57 units.
Also, in September, 18 buses that were manufactured or converted in Ukraine were registered for the first time ( 3.2% ).
Only 2 new imported buses were purchased. In comparison, this is 96.6% less than in September 2021.
The most popular buses on the domestic market
Mercedes-Benz holds the stable lead in sales of used buses within the country with a share of 40.6% (195 units). The second and third places were taken by Ukrainian brands — BAZ with a share of 8.1% (39 units) and Bohdan (7.5%, 36 units).
Volkswagen buses ( 7.3%, 133 units) and Ukrainian Ruta (6.5%, 31 units) also made it to the top 5.
As can be seen from the list of the 10 most popular bus models on the domestic market, Ukrainians most often buy small and medium-class buses. The leader in domestic resales was the universal Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (147 units). In second place are buses based on Mercedes Benz T1 and T2 (265 units), which have not been produced since the mid-90s of the last century. This item also includes goods vehicles that were once converted into buses.
The third place is for the most massive bus in the history of Ukrainian automobile manufacturing, BAZ A079 "Etalon" (68 units). The bus was built on the Indian TATA LPT-613 truck chassis, which in turn was created on the basis of the second generation Mercedes-Benz LN (they began to produce such in the distant 1964).
The fourth place was taken by Volkswagen LT (58 pcs.) — a competitor of the "sprinter", on the chassis of which many buses were also built and converted.
